Off the top of one's head, there is "SlingBlade" or "O Brother Where Art Thou". "O Brother ..." doesn't carry the resonance of this haunting film, but "SlingBlade" definately does.

Monster's Ball is another good one. Apparently,
Southern Tragedy + Billy Bob Thornton = Movie greatness

Check out Undertow. Very worthwhile.

"Daddy and Them"........ kinda tongue-in-cheek, but the characters are REAL southern/dysfunctional. I loved it so much I purchased it! A REAL bonus is that John Prine has a role.

"It's clearly a budget. It's got a lot of numbers in it." George "Dubya" Bush

"Eye of God" another movie I own....... strange, dark...... explores weird characters.

It's been awhile since this post started and I already made one suggestion. Here are two others. A Good Baby, also has some great folky music and if you can find it, The Lolly Madonna War with Jeff Bridges. That one was from the early 70s.

Ya'll are headed into "Camp" ... if ya wanna go in that direction Shelley Winters and her boys iin Ma Barker was good too.

Daddy and Them is a gen of a movie. Again Billy Bob, Laura Dern and her mother Dianne Ladd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ben Affleck, Andy Grifith, he was marvelous as was all these chaacters and Jim Varney in the last rol of his life (he as sick when he made this)
John Prine Brenda Blethan(sp) Man, I almost fell off my chair laughing at these people... why" because they all seemed sooo familiar...
That guy who played Robert Duvall's car-loving buddy in the Apostle was in it too.

Shadowboxer with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Helen Mirren
The Apostle with Robert Duval, and with Billy Bob Thornton and Walton Goggins
Poor Boys Game with Rosif Sutherland and Danny Glover

I agree with the person who mentioned Monster's Ball. One of the best movies ever.
