Shame about the songs

I really liked this movie but the songs in it really spoiled it for me, I turned the sound off for those parts, it was totally unecessary. It looks like some European films are going the way of Hollywood by adding songs to force people to feel a certain way. Please France (and Europe), don't go that way! It's why I love non-english speaking movies. The rest of the soundtrack (music only) was great though; it's enough.

I agree, the songs' use was quite shoddy.

reply

I liked the music (except for maybe the the rendition of Lilac Wine).

reply

Agree, those musical choices didn't cut it.

reply

Yeah, I really wish they had used less mainstream, non-English songs. Or had songs created for the movie, like in Run Lola Run. Because, ugh, U2? Please, no.

reply

That song was chosen on purpose: it's a reference to their having attended a U2 concert together. It doesn't mean you have to like it -- as it happens, I liked it a lot there -- but that's why.

However, in general I love the music. The bluesy guitar score, the Groove Armada songs, the Otis Redding ... it worked for me. A lot of Hollywood, yes, but everybody knows the French can't sing rock (or blues) to save their lives. Wine and food, yes. Not so much the blues.

reply

imho the songs worked great.

Just because it's a French film (albeit based on a US novel) doesn't mean it has to have songs only in French in it....

reply

Totally agree. Nothing wrong with the songs themselves, but their use in this film was jarring. Made it sound like a standard US rom-com.

reply

i agree, they destroyed the tension in the movie

so many movies, so little time
