What does 'state of play' mean?

State of Play is a cricketing term which indicates what the current situation is in a match that can last several days. If you google 'state of play' with cricket you will see that even in cricket it can refer to other things. A headline saying 'A Sorry State of Play' refers to an allegation of match-fixing.
