Despicable people

Consider. In order to get "the story," the newspaper reporters told countless blatant lies; they used intimidation; they stole documents; they withheld evidence in a criminal investigation; they tape-recorded conversations without the consent of the person to whom they were talking; they ransacked an individual's apartment without his knowledge.

In other words, Cal, Della, Dan, and even editor Cameron had all the moral rectitude of hyenas. The only characters who showed any integrity were DCI Bell and his partner Chewy. Compared to the newspaper jackals, they were paragons of virtue.

Part way through the series, I began to wish that just once when Cal, Della, or Dan approached someone and began to ask questions, that person would make their hand into a fist, haul back, and punch Cal, Della, or Dan in the nose as hard as they could, and continue to do so for as long as time and circumstances permitted.
