The IMDB credits list Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca (voice)(archive footage)... Peter Mayhew was just the guy in the suit, sound effects people made the sounds by manupilating the sound of a bear cub. So if it is just voicework, how is Peter Mayhew involved at all?
shareMy only guess the reason Mayhew is credited is because during the filming of the Original trilogy Mayhew actually spoke lines for Chewbacca so the other actors could get their cue to say their lines (and so the actors responses to Chewie would seem as though they understood what he was growling). Later on Ben Burtt went back and over-dubbed the real vocals for Chewbacca. If you own the DVD set of the original trilogy, it was touched upon briefly in the Empire of Dreams Documentary last I remember.
