This movie is brilliant

I would have to agree, that this movie will no doubt gain a cult following.

It is definitely unlike any movie out there. Aesthetically, its the wackiest, zanyiest film ever put to screen. At certain points it shows how digital effects can make reality into a total abstraction. Its like they gave the effects people acid and asked them how bendy and bonkers they could make this movie look. It might just be a first wave in cinema where we start to see an era of of more abstracted takes on reality.

It's like when Impressionism first hit the art world, everybody hated Cezanne and thought he was making total trash. He just had a brand new way of looking at the world and nobody had the balls at first to notice.

All great artists take that risk when they try something new.

Are you high on crack?

He is on crack and he is higher then a Kite on crack.

This movie made me want to barf on the girls in front of me so I could get a laugh.
The only time I felt more depressed was at my grandmother's funeral . . . but even then watching this movie Vs my Grandmother's funeral is pretty close on the "makes me want to commit suicide" scale.

No, he's not going to hell, maybe you're going to hell because of your taste in sex, drug, nudity, rude language and violence movies.

This movie deserves absolutely all of the criticism it gets. This was definately on of the worst movies i have seen in my entire life.

reply

How can you say that, this film beats the godfather on so many levels. This film is the greatest piece of creation since the wheel, and any other film is simply stealing from it's ideas. Son of the Mask=sheer genius in comedy. The part where the baby farts is text book hilarity with a cherry on top.
Also, the dancing baby gave me memoris of Casablanca. I dare a person to disagree with me, for I am of course right. Give Guterman an oscar for this film and do it with a smile, for people owe a lot to this film. I was laughing to the edge of ecstacy every time the baby commenced with another dump, fart, urinating gag and other aspects of toilet gags which made up a very funny film.

This film was targeted at pre schoolers and people with lobotomies.

I cant believe people didnt catch on your sarcasm, especially when it was dripping to that extent!

reply

the only way this movie would gain cult status is if every member of the cast and crew committed suicide on the same day....(which should have been its release date)!!!! this movie is *beep* to the point of...i dont even know...i am genuinely at a loss for words...THERE IS NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT IT.... NOTHING...honestly!!!

reply

dreckgullapy, you have articulated my thoughts exactly and far better than I could have. and your analogy to the critic's disgust for Impressionism and Cezanne is spot on. yes, the movie will no doubt gain a cult following because it is singular and controversial.

reply

agree that this movie is brilliant. although i think it's less that people aren't getting it and more that they are just hung up on not seeing Jim Carrey in the picture. and losing their minds over that. there are so many comments in here about Carrey. who cares? i liked Carrey in the first one, but that doesn't diminish how much i enjoyed this movie.

reply

I think Jim Carrey is a lousy actor, and this is definitely one of the worst movies that has ever been fathomed. I can't believe that someone actually sat down and said, "I think it'll be a good idea if we do a sequel to THE MASK and use Jamie Kennedy in our lead role." THE MASK was bad enough as it is where they DID NOT NEED TO CREATE THIS MOVIE. It was trash on the highest level, and I'm interested to see what a few of the people who liked it on here would consider among good movies? Big Momma's House 2? Juwanna Mann? You guys are ignorant to the point of no return if you think the majority of 6,000+ people voted for this movie without seeing it.

reply

there are at least 3000 Jim Carrey fans pissed off enough that he wasn't in this movie to vote a "1" simply because of that fact. probably more. there have been an endless stream of Carrey fans bragging that it deserves a "1" without even seeing it. so it's obvious the voting is skewed.

how else do you explain that it is 4.5 out of 5 stars and in the top 100 dvds of all time at dvd movie guide as one poster has pointed out but rated so low here? the answer is the people who actually watched this movie, the people who it was made for... kids, families, whatever, actually like it a lot and a bunch of Carrey fans hated it who as they've pointed out here were so pissed they never even saw it. fine. but the movie is far, far better than advertised here.

one more legit point: son of the mask does not show up on 2005's worst ten list on imdb. how could that be given the low rating? because the larger community at imdb obviously didn't it view it as a poor movie. but the Carrey fans did and let their frustration be known here over and over again.

personally, unlike you, i thought Carrey was a great comedian in his early pics (Mask, Liar Liar, Ace Ventura) but i still thought son of the mask was a very funny, enjoyable movie, too. overall, it's better than the mask.

reply

Unforunately your point about DVD Movie Guide is moot. They rate features of the DVD itself, not the movie. Apparently the DVD has good sharpness (picture quality), surround sound, audio commentary, etc. However, if you actually take the time to read the DVD Movie Guide REVIEW of the movie, you'll find that they consider very few movies to be worse than this one.

It may not show up on the 2005 top ten list, but it's number 26 on the ALL TIME worst movie list on IMDB. Let me just point out that out of the 91 big time movie review periodicals that reviewed this movie, 86 of them found it to be trash! Check RottenTomatoes if you don't believe me; even the users gave it a paltry 9% rating despite giving other crap movies like Big Momma's House a 33%, which is still lousy but almost quadruples Son's rating.

reply

the users on dvd movie guide gave this a 9 out of 10 stars which landed it on the top 100 films of all time among users. i doubt they are rating the technical features of over 1000 dvds rated there you moron. you think "It's a Wonderful Life is rated #8 overall due to its 1946 picture quality and surround sound?

amazon users gave SOTM 6 out of 10 stars

metacritic users gave it an 8 out of 10 stars

imdb has it a 1 out of 10 which is ridiculous and, yes, a bunch of whiney Jim Carrey fans. just read the endless Carrey posts in here. where's Carwwey? waaa! he was funny last centurwy, waaaa!

i could give a rat's _ss what critics said. they're a bunch of lemmings who got this one wrong. it happens. but i guess you need to read the reviews to see what you think.

reply

No need for personal attacks here. It doesn't exactly exhibit maturity. Isn't this a double standard then? You don't trust the users on imdB but you do trust the users on DVD Movie Guide of all places? There're only 313 votes on that site compared to over 6,000 here. And funny you mention Carrey. You think Jamie Kennedy is actually funny? Also, Amazon gives five star reviews and this DVD was 3 stars through only 88 votes. You're using user votes for Metacritic, which are ALWAYS more generous to a given movie. Metacritic itself gave it a 20 out of 100. Come on, your argument is flawed.

reply

Funny that you would ask others here not to attack you after calling them "ignorant to the point of no return." You clearly asked for it and get my award for most amusing and blatant imdb hypocrite.

As for the debate, I have to agree with those arguing the rating on this movie is way off. Ordinarily, I would not question imdb users. I don't. But I would on this movie for one simple reason. There were Jim Carrey fans in here for months campaigning to give this movie a "1" and making it clear they hadn't even seen the movie. That does a great disservice to the legitimacy of imdb ratings. It's aggravating.

Also, I thought the movie was actually very, very good. My kids loved it and their friends did, too. So, my own random sampling makes me question this rating. As a parent, I thought it was one of the better movies I can watch with my kids. Most are such utter crap. This one was funny and inventive.

reply

In fact I said you'd be ignorant to the point of no return IF you did in fact think that the 6,000+ votes were just random. I didn't directly call ANYONE ignorant to the point of no return. In all fairness, this top 250 list is a complete sham, so I wouldn't put too much stock into it anyway. You may like the movie and that's fine and there are going to inevitably be people who like ANY movie. But that doesn't necessarily make it a good one.

reply

youtube is yet another site that is giving son of the mask its due. There are ten parts, all rated about 4.5 out of 5 stars. and you can be sure users there are rating what they watch, rather than the blind hatchet job whiney Carrey fans have done in here.

reply

Anyone who considers YouTube to be a reliable ratings site needs to turn off their computer and go outside.

reply

that's what I'm talking about, if someone is going to give a review let's make it a good review... If someone saw the film and didn't liked it then that person should just walk away and forget it.

reply

What movie were you watching? This was a unintended farce of a movie with a bad plot, worse acting, awful direction, and was overall one of the worst movies ever made in Cinema history.

reply

Well i've seen this movie.....it sucks...bad...
I know i was like ....15 or 16 when i saw it...

CLEARLY this wasn't for my type of audience...better like 10 year old kids...

If i remember correctly....the story was actually kind of touching, father-son love thingy...but that's that...i belive there are loads of father-son movies there which are portraited in a far more better way

reply

Well, you saw the movie, so your take is entirely legit as opposed to the people in here who continually claimed they could judge this movie without seeing it. If it sucked for you, it sucked for you.

And I appreciate that you recognize you weren't the audience for this picture. Personally, I am a dad and I saw this with my kids, and I can't think of a father son type picture that's more fun and amusing than this one. I liked the first movie, so i could see how it would be frustrating that you didn't get a darker picture, but I am really glad they made this one because so many family pictures truly suck, and this one was truly good. I wish more people in here would recognize they may not be the audience for this picture. That's why I think SOTM is rated so well on other sites. It's audience is showing up there to rate it. I wonder how many posters in here are either parents or ten and younger because you're right. That is probably the audience. And given the posts, I doubt you get much of that audience in here.

To have a bunch of teen agers rating this movie prob doesn't make a lot of sense. Would it make any sense to have little kids rate a torture flick like captivity? I'm a dad. Me and my kids had a great time with this movie. On a certain level, I do think it's brilliant. And the overall rating here is skewed and extreme.

How can a putrefacted person like you got it's hands on a copy of "Son of the Mask"?
