How disturbing is this film?

Really want to see it, just wondering if it is very disturbing, or more just depressing? It doesn't matter either way though, I just want a little bit of an idea :)

It's definitely disturbing. More disturbing than depressing. Actually, equal amounts of both.

Thanks. Would you say more so than Welcome To The Dollhouse?

reply

waay more disturbing than welcome to the dollhouse

reply

Nope. Not disturbing at all...

reply

I didn't really think it was disturbing at all, I though it was more cooky and weird (in a good way) more than anything else.

reply

I thought it was even more disturbing and depressing than Happiness.

Seriously? I haven't seen Happiness yet but I'm not sure if I want to! I can handle quite alot of disturbing films aslong as it's actually a good film/has a point to the disturbingness

They're both disturbing, but let's say Palindromes is even more... unsettling. The most unsettling of Solodz's movies IMO. Now in order of preference, this is how I rank his work:

Welcome to the Dollhouse 10/10
Storytelling 10/10
Happiness 10/10 (I might be one of the few people who liked Storytelling a little more than this)
Palindromes 7/10

I think you should at least try to see it once. It will give you a bitter aftertaste, probably, but it's worth it. Solondz is controversial but doesn't go for gratuitous exploitation like, say, the atrocious Larry Clark.

larry clark should never be compared to solondz. i'm sorry, but clark's films are borderline exploitative under the guise of art.

Hollywood films = how we want the world to be.
Independent films = how the world really is.

And that's what I said... how DIFFERENT they are.

No offence to the original poster but I find posts like this pointless. Just watch the movie and make your own mind up. Inevitably you are going to be influenced by what people say, whether thats what you intended or not.

I thought this movie was funny, and intelligently made in several parts, but VERY disturbing nonetheless. Sex scenes should nevr include minors, and this movie had sex scenes with minors and I thought the use of child actresses in this, especially the youngest black actress at the very end of the film unecessary to the story. I am not a prude, but to see a child in a sexual situation, makes my skin crawl, even though I am quite aware some kids have sex.
