I agree. It felt like watching The Waltons ( a bit). If I had known it was a TV movie I would not have watched it.

Oh, yeah, they definitely butchered that book. I couldn't watch beyond the first 10 minutes of the movie, because they couldn't even get the simplest of details right. That bugs the crap out of me. Prime example of why I hate watching the movie version of a book I've already read, or vice versa.

Well, it's been 5 years since I watched those whopping 10 minutes, so I can't recall exactly why I was annoyed to the point where I didn't want to watch anymore. I do remember saying after one scene, "How hard is it to cast someone with the same hair color as the character in the book? Or, at the very least, dye it for the role? Actors HAVE been known to do that from time to time." But that's just me being nitpicky. That kind of thing may not bother you at all. So I say, if you're still curious about it, watch it. That is, if you haven't already.

I disagree!

I thought they picked up most of the details well. As I started to watch it, the house, barn, and yard were exactly how I pictured it. Also the town was exactly how I imagined. I loved those little details.

They things I found that had changed was:
Luke is 7 in the book, and 10 in the movie. I think it was changed so he could portray Luke better.

I expected Tally to be a little more sexy as the book says. More shapely, and wearing thin, tight dresses. Maybe this was changed due to it being a "Hallmark" movie.

Luke's mom is pregnant at the end of the book, but I didn't catch that in the movie, unless I missed it.

I expected Hank to be bigger, and Cowboy to look meaner. But the book was written in the eyes of a child.

I expected Pappy to be older, but Scott Glen did a good job.

The kitchen table was supposed to be up against the wall, where it was used for the radio, and a desk. In the movie the table was in the middle of the room.

All and All I loved the movie, but my favorite part about movies is the background (house, farm, fields, rivers, town), and they did a spectacular job at that!

you should reread it and re watch the movie cause im reading the book again right now and its VERY MUCH like the book

It's important to remember that films based on books are still separate artworks, and in my opinion, they should be judged accordingly.

The most glaring difference, one that changes Cowboy's character entirely, is how Hank and Cowboy fight on the bridge. The book has Cowboy essentially ambush and murder Hank for his circus winnings, where the film has Cowboy killing Hank because Hank catches Cowboy and Tally in a romantic embrace. The book shows Cowboy as a calculating person who kills a man for his money, and in the film he kills because he has no choice. It changes things entirely for the worse.
