Poor guy, must have felt bad for him taking his body to a extreme like that and didn't receive any recognition from it.

He did get recognition - that is more than nominations and awards (which is not why he would have done it anyway). The role was important for him. One of the most important ones in his career, it sounds like. He needed it at the time, and did it for himself, not for the industry recognition (which would be a silly reason to pick roles anyway).
