I can't tell if this is an ironic post or not, but for now I'll treat it like it isn't.

The idea that people give justification for killing and brutality is one of the themes and subjects of the film.

When the Basterds are generally successful at aiding the war effort, I'm happy. Yes, it's "Because: Nazis". World War II had to be fought to stop Adolph Hitler and his anti-human ideology.

On the other hand, when the Basterds take out the German patrol and then brutally slaughter the commanding officer, accompanied by whoops and cheering at Stieglitz's baseball bat brain bashing, it's uncomfortable. That guy was an enemy soldier, but he wasn't awful in-and-of-himself, just in association with the Nazi war engine. The brutality is in question.

We get it later in the theatre as the Germans laugh and enjoy a story of their hero gunning down Allied troops. We don't like this. They shouldn't laugh at that. But were we not laughing at some of the outrageous violence towards the Nazis in Tarantino's picture?

This twisting mirror that asks questions about entertainment, violence, justification, etc., etc., is one of the reasons I love the film. It isn't a film that says all Germans are monsters. It says that all Nazis are monsters. It says that some Germans were just caught in a whirlwind. It says that it isn't okay to enjoy sadism, but it does ask that we consider that war is violent and horrible and maybe that's necessary to overthrow certain awful regimes. I don't think it gives us a 100% clear answer.

But it's a cleverer film than just saying brutality is good because Nazis.

Now, if you meant this ironically, or as a dig against political correctness: fine. If you were trying to say something about the appalling way people justify violence at protests "because: Nazis" when Antifa are awful, too, or when their targets aren't as repellent as the actual Nazis - or whatever - then that's a fine conversation to have as well. But if that was the intent, I missed it.

I think you watched a different movie than the rest of us. The soldiers celebrating in the basement bar were not depicted as monsters. Zoller appeared somewhat sympathetic until he tried to force himself on Shosanna. The sergeant that Donowitz murdered with his bat appeared to be a honorable soldier.

just imagine the movie the other way around.

ya except one launched a war of aggression and began one of the worlds worst genocides in the world.. the other side didn't

reply

Racist? What race do you suppose Germans are? And while I'm commenting on your ignorance, I might as well add that "Because nazis" is ungrammatical and sounds childish.

reply

Gees, you think so.
