Three Glasses

I can't be the only one. Every time it's explained how to hold up 3 fingers, I try both. I'm definitely not German.

reply

I'd just do the 'ok' sign so I wouldn't get muddled up between the other two!

Hand gestures can be very revealing about where you come from. I was in Austria and there was an advertising poster for a detergent. The woman in the photo held up two fingers to the viewer, back of her hand foremost. In Austria she was pointing out two marvellous properties of the detergent. In Britain with the same hand gesture, she would have been telling the viewer to
f### off.

"Chicken soup - with a *beep* straw."

What does the middle finger mean in Germany?

reply

As a rude gesture, the same as in the USA because I have seen Germans using it. The British gesture I described would probably not be recognised as an insult in Germany any more than in Austria.
