It's working Chicago! DUMA crowds are growing!

I really love this film and have now seen it twice. This film will be a classic for generations. I encourage fellow Chicagoans of all ages to go see this movie--it is by no means just for kids (though it's great for them and kids in my two audiences absolutely loved it). I spoke to the manager of the AMC Cantera in Warrenville who said that there seemed to be great word of mouth during the week, because the first weekend it seemed like nobody had heard the movie was playing. But the attendance went up every day, and Thursday was especially crowded. The manager said the box office the second Friday (8/12) was larger than opening Friday (8/5), and that that never happens, but must mean great word of mouth because there is no advertising for the movie (I did see a little ad in the Trib). They'd also heard this was going on at the other theaters where DUMA is playing. So keep it up Chicago, we can save this wonderful movie. Go see it this weekend!

There might actually be some truth to his comments. I went to the Warrenville AMC theater (where it is surprisingly playing on 2 screens) for an 8:20 show on Thursday night (the 18th), and there were about 15 people at the show. Not mind-blowing, but I've been to many a small film at that theater on weeknights (and the movie plays on only one screen) where the attendance is 3,4, 5 people. The film was great! The kids and adults both seemed to enjoy it. This is truly a terrific film for all audiences. And no I am not a publicist.

Wow, does Ebert just write his reviews by taking things from the imdb boards? But that's cool, at least it means some ones looking at our opinions.

reply

Ebert does do research on the IMDb boards--so do many other movie critics. It is, after all, one of the easiest ways to gauge popular opinion concerning a film or TV show.

I'm a huge Carroll Ballard fan and have been following the Duma story as much as possible. Does anyone know what happened when Duma's run in Chicago was extended for a third week?

reply

Why not? They let idiots like you post here. What, because someone has an opinion different from yours, they're a "vulgar publicist?"

reply

So what happened on the 3rd weekend of Duma's Chicago release? Has the run been extended beyond that?

The imdb now lists a September 30th release date for L.A. only so maybe they are giving Duma a second test. I hope so.

And people wonder why the movie industry is losing money... you have a film that many people seem to want to see, and yet it gets hidden away in a single city like this. I'd pay for it if I could, but I can't, so I guess I have to download it. I will pay for this if it ever comes to my city (Calgary, Canada) and if it's released on DVD.

Just a late word....

Kenneth Turan is a critic for NPR and the LA Times, and he gave Duma a great review. At the end of the review he said in no fancy terms that people who want good movies to go see should call or email their local theaters and ask for Duma, or they will be doomed to Dukes of Hazzard remakes. :)

It was right on.

I loved this movie.
It was much better than Cats.
I'm going to see it again and again...

PS. It's too bad WB isn't behind this film.
Why does it always seem like execs at WB are clueless?
Maybe the 'ol boys at WB should try something called advertising...It's a crazy concept that has been known to work...
