That was such a great movie the bugs were so strange I'd never heard of them before I found it interesting. And why didn't Duma swell up like the guy did?

I believe they were a massive swarm of tse tse flies. I don't know why Duma or the bushbaby didn't swell up though. Maybe their fur protected them or they're not allergic to them. Good question!

Tsetse flies are one of the most dangerous creatures in Africa. Their bite causes sleeping sickness which is always debilitating and often fatal. Either the villagers possessed some tribal lore that enabled them to cure Rip or he just got lucky. But massive efforts are now underway to eradicate the fly and so bring the disease under control.
