Why does everybody hate this movie?

OK, I LOVED this movie and I can't understand why everybody hates it...I wanna know! If u hate it then please give me your opinion!

reply

Reasons why Raise Your Voice sucked:

1. Hilary Duff was in it.
2. It contained all the elements of a by-the-numbers follow-your-dreams movie: Small-town girl going to big city to pursue dreams of stardom, cute overseas boy, bitchy popular girl who happens to be cute overseas boy's ex, token black chick, Gothic girl who never talks to anyone, nerdy guy with weird name and crush on Gothic girl, supportive teacher, evil teacher, supportive family save for dad, someone dies because a drunk driver ran a red light. Take your pick - I've got more.
3. The password to the dorm was actually "monkeys". What the hell kind of password is that?
4. Hilary Duff was in it.
5. John Corbett's talent was wasted to an incredible degree.
6. So was that of Kat Dennings.
7. The relationship between Terri and Paul was reminiscent of Katherine and Sebastian in "Cruel Intentions" . . . though not as graphic.
8. Hilary Duff was in it.
9. It made some of Hilary Duff's other movies look good.
10. Hilary Duff can't sing worth a damn.
11. The general consensus among movie reviewers was that it sucked.
12. You felt a need to ask for someone to write this list.
13. Hilary Duff was in it.
14. Hilary Duff was in it.
15. Hilary Duff was in it.

you suck RioMadeira...

Iloved this movie. It was a sweet, charming film, that is one of my favorites.

It's extremely cliche and therefore unnecessarily predictable. There are too many common teen movie themes such boy and girl fall in love, get in a fight, and get back together. The acting was corny and at times awkward. It wasn't horrible movie and the general idea of the plot of a girl going to a summer music course was good but it was written and performed in a mediocre way.

reply

You hate this movie because of Hilary Duff? You are so stupid!

reply

No, she's just one of the many reasons. And next time you want your insults to really make a dent, make them more elaborate than "You are so stupid!".

dude do u know hilary?? because u cant just hate people because they are in a movie or in the media. thats just sad. i mean if they were drug addicts setting bad examples for chirldren i could get why u would hate them then but not some one like hilary duff shes a goody 2 shoes. why exactly do u hate her?

reply

Because everybody loves her, and they don't know her and it's annoying that she's on every cover of every magazine..and im always wondering..what the heck does joel madden see in hillary?- Besides the fact, that she's pretending to be something she's not: Here are a few pics of what she used to be:
http://www.skinz.org/celebrity/hilary-duff/hilary-duff-wallpapers-3.jpg
http://www.celebopedia.com/duff/images/hilary_duff.jpg

and what she is now:
http://www.fordstheatre.org/Pages/performance/2005%20Gala%20Pics/Hilary%20Duff.jpg

I would look up more pics..but i don't like wasting my life on looking for pics for actresses that i don't like.

I get that she's growing up, but this new image, seems like an act to me.-and her music sucks.

The only reason some people don't like this movie is cause of Hilary Duff. Why? Cause she's famous? So? So if your favorite actor played in a totally stupid movie, you wouls like it cause your actors in there. Or you saw a awesome movie with a horrible actor in there you would hate it? You logic doesn't work. Though she may be famous, Hilary Duff stands out as a role model. She doesn't get drunk every week end. She's not a druggie. She doesn't play in horrible movie. She MAKES them! She's the best part. And even if some else played Terri in this movie, i would like it. I think it is awesome. Though some idiotic people are to stupid to see this. It's a great movie.

reply

those who like her voice, answer me this. Where is her vibrato? It's like a rule. Every famous singer has to be able to pull of vibrato! She doesn't even bother. she just draaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggsssssss the note along and it sounds so bland.

like in come clean....."coming cleeeeeeaaaaaaa heeeeeeeahhhhhh heeeeeeah heaheaheaheann"
ANSWER ME THAT

reply

Why does everyone think Terri and Paul's realtionship was disturbing? I guess no one remembers what a good relationship between brother and sister is anymore

reply

hahaha, 16 pages. (I only read two)

I don't know if this has been said before, but I think the reason so many people found the brother-sister relationship disturbing is that Duff is trying to be cute and flirty throughout almost the entire movie (everyone thank god she wasn't like that with her dad too)

what I hated about it was:
1. my 12yo sister keeps watching it
2. duff over acts waaay too much in every scene. she's not just happy, she's ecstatic, she's not sad, she's devastated
4. I know for a fact that duff can do better!! both with movie choices and acting

all in all, the movie makes me very angry and I want to punch through my tv just so I can strangle hilary duff

I know what you're thinking and you should be ashamed!

reply

seems like youre wasting your time now.
I used to have an issue with her because, honestly, she really does not have a whole lot of talent, she plays the same character in every movie and doesnt use her voice from her diaphram AND had to have a voice double for this movie. Thats what bugged me about this movie, is that they chose HER to play someone that is supposed to be really talented.

BUT...as a person, no one really knows what she is like unless you KNOW her and she seems like a good person who was self conscious about her weight because of the media telling her shes fat...yes she could have told them to eff off, but shes now healthy and happy, and thats what matters.

to sum up...
YES she is not very talented at ALL and I mostly agree with what most people say about her....

BUT dont say you hate her, because you dont know who she really is and what she is really like. You dont know her intentions, and are only basing your judgements on her by what she looks like and her career and her actions....but its true, you dont know someones reasoning behind their actions until you hear from them why they did what they did.

Chill out, stop hating on someone you dont know, and if you dont like wasting your time on people/things you dont like, then DONT. Its as simple as that.

reply

I don't hate her. But starring in a movie about music when she can't remotely sing pisses me off, frankly.

Hillary Duff was in "Lizzie McGuire". That show sucks more dick than Andy Dick. And the "Lizzie McGuire" movie? <<barf>> So, yeah, that´s why she sucks. Oh, I forgot, she couldn´t sing her way out of *beep*
So she might be 19, but her acting carreer, sorry to anyone who likes her but it´s my opinion, sucks. However, she is cute. Just saying, I´m not a pervert or anything. I mean, look her up in Google Pictures and tell me she isn´t cute.

After reading your post that spurred the other person's comment, I don't think you have much room to be talking here, sweetcheeks.
"Hillary Duff is in it," basically repeated seven times. Yep, there's an intelligent, well thought out, elaborate remark if ever any of us have seen one. Sounds like you may have some self-esteem issues to deal with, not to mention an attention span problem. Was that elaborate enough for ya honey?

reply

actually no its not stupid and heres y
u go to the best restaurant in town to get the best food made by the best cleanest chef but the waiter who is only touching the bottom of the plate looks disgusting, he didnt really do anything to the food but still u wouldnt eat it because ur mind has this ugly image and depending on how wild ur imagination is ull probably never come to the restaurant again..........that said a movie is similar in so many ways evreythin has to be right not just the recipe, the chef the waiter the place, everythin and with hilary duff serving i cant but get out and hope no one saw me there, i really dont like her and if i dont like the main actor i am certainly not gonna enjoy the movie especially when u can predict most of it, its a mind thing just like if u hate a guy no matter how funny his jokes might be ull find them lame and if u love a guy no matter how lame the jokes are ull be on the floor cryin, so no its not stupid.

Well for #3 he was joking about the password.\

i hate to interrupt this little argument, but do any of you know per chance what songs Sloan played on the piano? i really need the names of them if you know. thanks.
P.S. i liked the plot of the movie and i loved sloan, but i'm sorry hillary duff killed it. sure her acting is ... alright... but her singing needs to end. now.

reply

I actually thought it was okay, at least the OTHER actors were okay....was Hilary's voice dubbed? Well, first she actually sounded like she can sing, then at the end of the freakin' movie when they perform, it was so lame. I don't know who actaully calls that singing! Anybody can sing like that. Then when the teachers looked at each other liked she finally nailed it...C'mon.

reply

Not to mention that there was freaky unsiblingly chemistry between the siblings, and no, it's not because they were too close!

To RioMadeira
Hilary Duff was in it isn't a real reason.

2. this is the only film ive seen with that plot and i see lots of films so you're basically a liar coz ur life is so worthless!
3. monkeys wasnt the password coz if u actually watched it then u would know that he was only joking.
4. it was a great movie and it touched me so you must not have a heart.
5. hilary duff can sing and if u actually listened 2 1 of her songs instead of being mean 2 innocent peole then you would realise that.
5. its not our fault if ur life is so boring u hav 2 write horrible things about other people on here so keep your opinions 2 urself coz we dont give a damn."

jennie_e, i have two things to say to you, how old are you? What are you 12?

Riomaderia has a right to state her opinions,so don't be rude by saying "riomaderia is so dumb!" what makes her dumb?-By stating her opinions? By actually being right..that hillary duff is by far the worst singer in the world..and have you noticed that she's like 18 now...and she's still doing pg movies? im not saying she should do R rated movies or anything, just if she wants people to like her..she should take more challenging roles, then be in some pg rated movie that she can sing awful in.

reply

If you've seen SO many other movies like this one, you must watch too many movies. I'm addicted to movies, and this is unique to me.

reply

[deleted]

Oh please! a)Hilary's voice is whiney, emotionless and has no range, and b) Her acting is unorginal, she plays the same character over and over, and she is just a bad actress in general! She sucks! It's nice that you were touched by the movie, I don't mean that sarcastically, but she can't act and when your lead actress lacks talent that's a problem. If she was a "great actress', she wouldn't have been nominated for two Razzies in one year as "Worst Actress".

reply

you go, RioMadeira! You rock! I totally agreed with every thing you said.

reply

Im sorry but i when you listed 'all the elements of a by the numbers follow your dreams movie' all you did was list what happens in this film! That isnt always the plot in a follow your dreams movie. Clearly you dont like hilary duff so watching a film with her as the lead is not the best idea is it?

reply

I couldn't agree any more. Hilary Duff cannot sing to save her life, and a lot of it sounded computer-generated/altered, and it still sounded terrible. It would've been slightly better if

1) It wasn't so cliche
2) They cast someone who can ACTUALLY sing
3) They didn't put Hilary Duff in it
4) I don't think conservatories would be so open with their policies--if they actually did their research prior to writing it
5) I don't think Hilary Duff can actually sight read
6) It's painful to listen to her sing or "try" to hit notes.

reply

TOTALLY agree with every single thing you said Rio.
hillary duff's singing makes me want to shove an 8 inch spike through my left ear until it comes out of my right ear.
She cant act or sing, and in this movie she tried to do both. I still cant f*&^ing believe i let my ex talk me into wasting time on this movie.

reply

That's hilarious. i totally agree with you! I really hated this movie as well

So? I LOVE mean girls and i HATE lindsay lohan. Your just rude

reply

This a awesome movie i love it!

reply

LOL!!! rio that's HILARIOUS! ...and i totally agree

reply

I do believe that you have absolutely summed up the entire movie in one perfect post, and I thatk you for it. I have yet to find more than three or four things good with this movie at all. A) The violin was sweet. B) Oliver James is freakin awesome to look at. He may not be able to act, but that doesn't make his any less attractive. C) I happen to be in love with a loony percussionist much like the one in the movie, much to his dismay. So, my o wise master, what do you have to say about movies on Disney channel? I voice my opinion (they freaking suck), but I'm sure yours come out much clearer.

1. to those who hate this movie sayihng it stank to hiiiiiiiiigh heeellllllll, why are you here? wouldnt you have mopre fun discussing a movie you like, something with acting and plotlines, unlike this movie?
2. i didnt hate it, but it wa sbad. very bad. thats why i kept wathcing it, though. i laughed sooooooo hard whenever she cried, he died, (it happened like 3 times), or there was a sentimental moment.
3. calling this a teen film is an insult. it is, (not an insult) for 9 and 10 year olds. do any of you 20/30 year olds remember what it was like to be a teenager? sneaking into r rated horror movies, stayignup late with a friend watching movies til 4 am? because thats what me, my friends, and everyone at my high school do.
4. this film had terrible acting and a terrible script, which brings it down to a 3 or so. bringing it up to a 7 or 8 is the fact that it made me laugh realllllly hard. but then, her singing was terible. final grade:5

reply

You want to know why I'm here? On this very board?
It's quite a mystery to me. I like solving mysteries; its fun. So I come on this board to find out the truth about Hilary Duff and what on earth makes her popular. Her voice has no life, no talent. She is good looking and that makes her famous. And it makes me sick. So I'd love to hear from an intelligent person, what is it about her that you love? Her blonde hair?

There are just so many more interesting, fascinating and unique women that YOUNG girls should be looking up to. If they are so protected by images of clean H Duffster then imagine the shocker when they come to 15/16 etc and realise life is not a bloody Disney movie.

Take Frida Kahlo. For sure she made some mistakes, but she was true to who she was. And she didn't play into some commercialised view of what society wants women to be. She didn't give a crud! She did her thing. And that has changed many people/teens I know. In high school we watched it in class (Frida), people were changing because of a real woman with substance not some robotic, promiscuous and shallow popstar.

1. I got kind of annoyed watching the same shots of her brother dieing over and over and over
2. Her boyfriend had a drinking problem that was brought up a few times, and then was completely forgotten by the end
3. Also, in the same scene when the boyfriend came to her room drunk, they were at least smart enough not to let him into the room, but that she went up alone to the roof with him without telling anyone doesn't really set a good example.
4. The brother-sister relationship was a little creepy at points.
5. Every charecter was so cliched: the hippy aunt, the strict father, the mean girl, the poor outspoken friend. Even if they wanted to go with cliches, they could have at least picked one cliche per charecter and left it at that. The combination of alcoholism and sweet, caring boyfriend does not really make sense. Also, Kiwi seemed to encompass everyother stereotype all at one time.
6. That my little sister has made me watch this enough times to pick it apart like this.
7. That this had the potential to be a really good movie before the script was changed.

The positives:
1. I like Rebecca De Monray, Johnny Lewis, and Jason Ritter (though not so much in this).
2. A few of the songs were okay.

I liked the movie, I like Hilary Duff... I'm 28. Certainly didn't pick up on any Cruel Intentions vibes... just saw them as a very close borther and sister pair. Pauls death flashing throughout well yeah, when something that tragic happens then it does impact your life in a major way. Those that got tired of seeing it, you are incredibly lucky to have not had something equally tracgic happen to you, therefore you couldn't relate.

As far as cliched been there done that just like a million other movies out there... most movies are these days, that's not necessarily a bad thing. The movie was meant to appeal to a younger crowd of pre teens and early teens, young girls most specifically the same crowd of people that buy her CD's and watch Lizzie McGuire and that's pretty much what it did.

I'm under the age of 16, and I really don't like Hilary Duff either.

I will honestly say that I have not seen this movie, so I'm not going to bash it. However, I don't think she's a great actress. I think she's pretty mediocre. Her voice drives me nuts. The fact that every single Disney "star" has a music career really bothers me, though I do Aly & AJ and Raven.

The fact that Hilary Duff was in this movie made me uninclined to watch it. (Though I have to say... Oliver James would be a big plus.)
