This movie was so good.

8.5 / 10 at the very least from me. The screenplay was creative and the dialogue was realistic yet entertaining, it made a fine balance of comedy and drama and the acting was brilliant. Also, It has one of the greatest openings of any film, ever (along with You Can Count On Me, Naked, and several others).

Does anybody think this should have received more attention and higher box office? I mean it had quite a bit of star power and an interesting trailer, was it not promoted well enough? In my opinion the Screenplay, Lisa Kudrow (Best Actress) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Best Supporting Actress) should have received nominations from more award bodies. Steve Coogan and Laura Dern were also brilliant. What a fantastic and underrated movie.

Lisa Kudrow was also great in Roos's other film The Opposite of Sex.

Some of the best movies are these well-peopled indies. I wouldn't expect it to get more attention, but when you discover it on Sundance or IFC or wherever, you really can get taken with it. I like these actors, and the parts are well fleshed-out. It's nice to see Peter Horton play gay, even if he's only in it for a couple of minutes, and I especially enjoyed Jesse Bradford. He's starting to be favorite of mine.

I agree though I'd give the movie a higher rating.

I was surprised at how good it was even though I knew nothing about it. I randomly came across it on Sundance and gave it a shot. I was just blown away by everything-- the acting, the directing... and I loved LOVED the split-screen text updates. How clever and so much better than a voice-over!

When I worked in Blockbuster a few years ago it was a title that was hardly ever rented by customers. I'd try and recommend it as much as I could but people wouldn't listen.

I just watched it for the first time in about four years and it really is a great film. Great acting, characters and soundtrack. I loved the tracks Maggie sung and will definitely get around to buying the soundtrack in the next few weeks. I also loved the split screen with the text telling you what will happen to the characters in the future. A gem of an indie film.

I totally agree. I was absolutely flabbergasted by Kudrow's magnificent performance...The camera loved her every scene & her acting went "toe-to-toe with the incredible yet subtle & nuanced 'performance to die' for by Maggie... I had to watch this flick TWICE back-to-back after thirsting for greater comprehension of each character's motivations...This movie is now ranked as one of the best, stumbled-upon 'diamonds in the rough/underrated gems I have ever seen since I accidentally saw "Closer" Hell, even Tom Arnold & Jason Ritter killed in this gem...

Agreed! What a sleeper. Don't know how I missed it six years ago. Lisa Kudrow was captivating; couldn't take my eyes off of her. I can't think of one actor who put in a bad performance. Tom Arnold? Who knew? The casting person knew it seems. Excellent film!
