Money in the sock...

im confused. so was the money in the sock ever stolen? or did reda hide it from his father? or did the father lie that it was stolen and reda found out himself?

reply

i think you could take it in two ways... either
1 - reda's father misplaced it and wrongly accused the man
2 - reda's father hid it and accused that other guy to get rid of him

I was also confused, but my wife (who has a more complicated family than me) explained it to me in a way which made it completely clear. It was a genuine mistake on the father's part, and when the son discovered the mistake, he covered it up to spare his father's feelings. Why? Remember the father saying to the Turkish policeman that what use would his pilgrimage be if he made false accusations? In the light of that clarification I realised that the son's attempts to save his father's feelings - and the very confused and angry way he handled it - was one of the most poignant and moving moments in the film (and there were a lot of them).

I think the suggestion that the father might have deliberately lied to everyone is completely out of keeping with what we learn about his character in the film.

At first I didn’t see it like this but this sounds like a good explanation (and the correct one, maybe).

perfect explanation. I din't think the father, being such a devout believer and all would hide the money and accuse the man to get rid of him. he just dropped it in the car and wasn't aware. and the son knew his father would be crushed if he realized that he wronly accused an innocent man, a Muslim brother who actually honestly offered to help them.

Vincent Hanna: Who? Who? What are you, a *beep* owl?

At first, I thought he had hidden it in order to frame and get rid of Mustafa, but yeah the director explained, during the Q&A on the DVD extras, that the father had simply misplaced the money.
