Gozu vs. Eraserhead

I was watching Eraserhead the other day, and I just thought, "Man, this is the most bizarre movie ever." But then I thought of Takashi Miike.

Now, it's been a while since I've seen this or any other Miike movies. But, which movie do you think is more bizarre, Eraserhead or Gozu? This is not a question as to which movie you like better, just which is more bizarre.

Also on topic, Do you have any other bizarre movies that could take the cake? These could be non-Miike related. The only Miike movie that I can remember being almost as bizarre was Visitor Q. I'm not sure though, I've always associated Gozu with the most bizarre.

But anyways, let's discuss bizarre movies!

I think the atmosphere and blur between reality and dreams makes eraserhead more bizarre, but only by a little bit.
If you want another bizarre Miike movie then you should check out Izo. It's kind of like if you mix Gozu and Lone Wolf and Cub. Another bizarre movie is Alejandro Jorodowsky's The Holy Mountain or El Topo.

Surrealist film is almost always bizarre. Hell "Tesuo" was pretty damn bizzare, but, although bizzare, all the forementioned films are very linear, making them completely understandable.
But as far as a 'most bizzare' award, I give it to "The Wedding Trough"... I mean... it was just weird... alittle boring at parts, but weird all around.

I'll swallow your soul!
Liberals suck...

Gozu. Eraserhead was just Lynch saying, "I'm going to film a bunch of random scenes and not tell anybody what the hell they mean. I'm so cool."

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed

haha

hmmm it sounds like you didnt understand the film, even though it was pretty obvious just what it was about. people say they dont understand, but its freaking obvious. it sounds like im being a ponsy git with his head up his arse, but i genuinly dont understand what there is not to get.

makes no sense.

but then people who dont understand it tell David Lynch off, yet he clearly made an awesome film as it is a cult film, and therefore as a fanbase who love it. David Lynch is amazing, his movies are made to confuse and seem blurry, he doesn't just whack a few scenes together and sell it (inland empire is an exception, ye or me that film works) his movies do have stories, abstract but they do exist, and they do have an idea that is hidden, just don't be a dick and say its a bunch of scenes put together, it definately isnt, if it was it wouldn't work, but it does

sorry i always get carried away when talking about Eraserhead

As a matter of fact, I'm there right now.

reply

pft... I havent seen it (Eraserhead)... because of ALL the wanky pretentious reviews and write ups i read about it...

I just hope Lynch doesnt *beep* up the stupid remake of the UTOPIA tv Series the brits are doing at the moment.

Maybe I should watch Eraserhead so I can confirm my assumptions :P

here, here.
el topo was great, even though (being 14) i didnt really understand it, apart from the various religious metaphors.

LSD + Bjork + Alice In Wonderland = One Hell of a Trip.

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM RULES!!!

reply

Oh yes! Holy Mountain and El Topo... Now that's some bizarre, effed up, genius stuff! xD

reply

Eraserhead. But just a bit. El Topo is also somewhere near Eraserhead and Gozu. The works of Chris Cunningham are pretty weird too, though probably not as weird as these 3 movies.

reply

Eraserhead is more bizarre, but that's not even Lynch's weirdest movie. INLAND EMPIRE takes that title, and I hate to say it's also his worst film (IMO).

But the weirdest movie ever is Begotton http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101420/ Not for the faint of heart.

http://maynardandlando.blogspot.com/ And Pats fans wonder why everyone hates them

El Topo is most definately the movie to watch. And my answer is Eraserhead.

WATCH "I WAS A TEENAGE ZOMBIE" Excellent B horror/comedy!

reply

I thought that "Eraserhead" was the weirdest movie ever until I saw "Begotten." So I agree that "Begotten" takes the cake - if you can find it. You won't forget it.

reply

In my opinion, "Eraserhead", mostly because I choose to comprehend "Gozu" as strange homoerotic fanstasy (therefore it makes at least some sort of sense to me). To me, "Eraserhead" is a hell of a lot weirder than "Gozu".

reply

Close call, but Eraserhead due to its bleak dystopian setting...

Oh my God not another dead body!

reply

"Eraserhead" is even more bizarre.

But even more weird stuff than Eraserhead or Gozu are:
Luis Buñuel's "Un chien andalou" (the weirdest film I've ever seen) or "L'âge d'or" (also by Buñuel)
and
Alejandro Jodorowsky films, who after "Early Buñuel" is the filmmaker that IMO have produced the most disturbing and weird films ever. If you don't believe me just watch "El topo" "The Holy Mountain" or "Santa Sangre".

Then filmmakers like Lynch, Greenaway, Pasolini, Antonioni, Cronenberg, Tarkovsky, Reygadas, Bergman, Cocteau, etc.

reply

Naked Lunch! (Cronenberg)...now that was messed up...

reply

Naked Lunch is good but its filled with other messages that i didnt dig (the book has even more homo messages).

Begotten is weird but its almost impossible to watch in one sitting

El Topo is not retarded, Santa Sangre is retarded.

Izo and Dead or Alive 2 are pretty sweet Takashi Miike films too.

David Lynch is the man! Oh yeah and watch Twin Peaks TV series!

reply

i can't believe i'm seeing so much praise for Begotten here... makes me sick. such an amateurish pseudo-arthouse piece of *beep* an Eraserhead wannabe if you ask me.
