Got in trouble for lending a friend Gozu...

It's true. My friends dad even felt the need to drive me home and have a talk with my mom. I found it funny, apparantly she didn't. I wouldn't have been incredibly pissed off, and probably would have laughed the whole thing off, had my friends dad not reffered to Gozu as "an X-Rated Aliens". I mean, come on now. If you're going to say it's an X-Rated anything, say an X-Rated Mulholland Drive or something. I'm not really sure what my question is though, just felt I'd share.

A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer.

reply

Funny, I once got some pretty disapproving comments after convincing my friend to watch Mulholland dr. - must be the lesbians. LOL.

reply

Hmmmm,

I watched Irreversible with my family, and i knew what the film was about, i think they soon got the jist as well.

Awkward

reply

You just watched irreversible with your family?!?! Oh my god, man, I salute you. That could quite possibly be the worst movie to watch with anyone, let alone your family.

A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer.

reply

Yeah, I watched it in class (as part of the shocking cinema module).
That seven-minute rape scene felt more like seven hours...

reply

You watched it in class? Respect. Which country?

reply

A friend of mine actually took a date to see Irreversable; he didn't bother to read up about it but assumed it was just another Euro art-flick, and since this girl was apparently somewhat of an intellectual he thought he could impress her. Suffice to say, things didn't work out...

reply

"What did you say this movie was called?"
".. Basic Instinct, grandma"

reply

Ohhhhh I made that mistake! When I was on Film School, Irreversible was on Theatres here in my country. All my classmates were talking about how good and unexpected the film was, so when it was the time to take my mom to the cinema, we went to see Irreversible.
That terrible rape scene! I couldn't barely stand it, and my mom, my dearest mom, she had to close her eyes... She's a woman of arts, but she's very sensitive. She told me how much she wanted to get out during that scene... I didn't knew how hard the scene was, so, how could I know?

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.

reply

Happiness (1998) is pretty up there, too!

reply

I also saw Irreversible with my father and was quite the experience, but fortunately he's a very intelligent guy, so we talked about it afterwards and expressed our disgust over some of the violence that plagued the movie (well, it's purpose and effect).

reply

I've seen far too many dodgy films in the company of my parents... Irréversible, Visitor Q, Ai No Corrida... I don't think my parents believe in censorship really. They let me watch American Gigolo when I was about 4 (probably the most *beep* aspect of this freedom). But I do have exceptionally fond memories of seeing Walkabout and Tampopo at a very young age, so it's been highly beneficial for me.

And as with you, oracio_r, my father is also pretty permissive with the less savoury scenes of cinema, or at least understanding.

reply

Good god, well done! I'd never be able to watch that film with ANYONE!

Many years later. just wanted to give kudos for the Mitch Hedberg sig... if you're still alive.

!No IMDB idiot may respond to this.!

reply

Hahahahaha, hilarious, stupid parents huh? I remember when i was young i got banned from a friends house for listening to 2pac music at this guys house haha, dad freaked out and banned me haha, stupid friends dad. I can imagine was some idiotic parent would have to say if they saw there kid watching any Miike movies (besides Sabu and Rainy Dog) which are prety chill.

reply

I got a lot of guff for lending Tetsuo around to friends. Just something about giant phallic drills that bugs parents ;)

We cant stop here, this is Bat Country!

reply

how old are you people....and why do your friends watch these movies with there parents

reply

Alright kids, if you really want to push the boundries, go for Miike's Vistor Q... After watching that, I highly doubt uptight parents will be able to utter a word for a few days trying to get the images out of their head. In the first 10 minutes of the film, they might start believing in lowering the standards of child abuse. (joke on the abuse part)Seriously it depends on the parents, hell mine knew they couldn't stop me from watching horror films, because of the process of making them, etc, so I had a clear understanding the differences between reality and the majority of genre films, but hell, I was 3 and it was explained up till I was 8.

I did watch Visitor Q with my mother, the only reason being that I watched it in the family room and she was in there. She walked out of the room in disgust before the first scene was over but came but just in time for the **miracles of life** if you know what i mean. Lol i love that movie its halarious.

reply

lol nah the sound of the pop in the tub was worse lol but Happiness Of The Katakuris(sic?) is a toned down version of Visitor Q, but both are hysterical.

I was watching an episode of Star Trek DS9 and two female characters were kissing and my mum walked in and decided that I should be careful in case I became a lesbian. I am not sure what she would make of Gozu or Irreversible. Somehow I don't think she would appreciate it.

reply

I like the idea of someone becoming a lesbian because they watched an episode of Deep Space Nine.

Pills are good! PILLS ARE GOOD!

reply

Same here.

reply

Don't forget his other films, Full Metal Yakuza, Deadly Outlaw Rekka, etc. Not all of his films were of the caliber. Worst of the bunch would be Ichi The Killer, Gozu, and of course, Vistor Q.

reply

haha lol what? damn, what world are u living in?

reply

I'm 15, so are most of my friends, and they dont generally watch it with their parents. Most parents will go into their kids room when they hear an orgasm and powerdrill at the same time.

this has got to be one of the most original threads i have ever read. its good to see something other than "this movie sux" or "worst movie ever"

Is this your homework Larry?

reply

yeah, this films classic, just for it's approach to the gore, it's like pop-gore or something, just ridiculously over the top, like the guy who splits in half n u give it half a second til his innards become his outtards, and when ichi steps in the room n u just see a river of blood flow out as well as the odd vital organ

for that i loved this film

but no, i'm not young just because i watch films with my parents, i was back home for the weekend and finally got to borrow irreversible off a mate, and tbh, after all i'd heard about it, it weren't as bad as i feared

my monica bellucci obsession has waned a bit since though : P

but yeah i did have to warn all concerned, "soon they'll go to the rectum and someone will have their head smashed in with a fire extinguisher" lol, the way that was shot i think it's just as hard to wach as the rape

Actually, I have to agree. It's interesting at least.

I kinda feel sorry for you kids. I'm probably the same age as your parents. I'm the same age as Takashi Miike. I'm very much into Miike movies, along with other movies in the same genre. It's a shame that more parents don't actually sit down with their kids and find out what some of the best one-off film-makers of our *own* generation are doing.

Now you're like 24! Are you still alive?

reply

I showed the ending of Gozu in my Mass Media class in senior year.

My teacher was very angry + disgusted and made me bring in another movie to show ten minutes of. I picked the opening murder of Suspiria which apparently was acceptable to her. :o)

I wonder what she would have done if I showed the end of Kichiku Dai Enkai. :3

reply

My parents got me Ichi the Killer and Audition for my B-day, and the Dead or Alive trilogy for Christmas.

reply

I watched Audition with my dad and woke him up for the torture scene. Also made him watch the part in Gozu when the guy crawls out of the woman's vagina. While he did call me sick both times, he was actually cool about it. My parent's are pretty open to the movies I watch. And no, I'm not a shut in who lives in a basement. :)

reply

i convinced my three friends to watch gozu and afterwards they just kinda stared at me....unsettling

reply

Heh, I did a presentation on Miike Takashi, and my media teacher vetted all the videos I brought in. He was kind of pissed of because "I couldnt get the pause button working" to stop it from going to the nasty stuff.. Like the juxtaposed images of a woman's throat slit and a rape in Ichi the Killer :D. Seriously though people need to grow up a lil, sociapaths dont watch takashi miike films, they watch Brett Ratner flicks.

reply

hahah thats amazing, im starting media next year so i may take a leaf out your page.
i watched Gozu last night and i thought it was another typical Takashi Miike film, not in a bad way, i thought it was very entertaining, especialy with the ladel, and the milk spraying in the guys face.
i 1st was a Miike film about a year ago and now have 7 of them, and i can only watch them with one of my freinds as all the others get totally grosed out or scared, i think that was because of Audition.

reply

I've managed to collect 14 so far... I dont get alot of money, so its a rare occasion. I own:

Gozu
Full metal Yakuza
Ichi the killer
City of lost souls
Audition
Rainy Dog
Agitator
Ley lines
Dead or Alive
Dead or Alive 2
Visitor Q
Happiness of the katakuris
Shinjad Triad Society
Fudoh: The Next Generation

I'm probably gonna buy more next month, need to get the entire MPD psyco collection, Family + Family 2, a list of others, anything region 2 for the uk.

I watched eraserhead with my parents when i was younger and on pcp.
Thank god i dont mess with that stuff anymore though.
I dont know how i kept a straight face and acted normal with that

WATCH "I WAS A TEENAGE ZOMBIE" Excellent B horror/comedy!

reply

How old are you, kiddo?

reply

Kids are so dumb and crazy these days. Like another poster said i used to toke reefer and watch crazy flicks like El Topo and Tetsuo. Im 24 now.

And yes kids are getting dumber they get caught so much easier these days. Perhaps if they stopped looking at myspace all day and picked up a book and lay off the e pills we wouldnt have this problem. :)

David Lynch is the man! Oh yeah and watch Twin Peaks TV series!

reply

I felt odd watching Gozu late at night, with no one home and the windows wide open, during that last scene of the movie. People might get the wrong impression.

This reminds me of the time that I watched Suicide Club at my friend's house while his parents were walking around. He said "thanks, now my parents think I'm a satanist". He bought the movie a week later and told me it was a "in your room" kind of movie.

It can be tough to teach ourselves about film and appreciate it our age. There so many limitations to "whats appropriate". My parents have almost givin up on censoring what i watch. I've got about 140 DVDs, most of which they've never heard of, so they can't do a whole lot about it. Not sure if thats good or bad.

P.S.
I have to present a scene that shows humanity to my art and film teacher.
I think the opening scene of tetsuo should do rather nicely. hehe

reply

If I had a son and he brought home a film like White Chicks. Then I'd drove over to his friends house and have a talk with the friend. Then give him some decent films.

reply

People stay clear of me when I ask them to play a part in one of my films - simply because they know I'm influenced by the violence and connotations seen in Miike's and Kim Ki-Duk's films.

Also, I've shown Fruit Chan's 'Dumplings' to people, they walked out of my bedroom and drank tea in my kitchen!!!! How rude! I think the reason they walked out was because I'm a 19 year old girl and I love extreme movies...I don't think they could believe I'm into films like this lol!

LAST FILM SEEN: King and the Clown *****/***** (5/5)

reply

speeking of dumplings, i managed to get my parents to watch all of three extremes. As it turns out, they love park chan wook. And they jumped at the chance to go the florida film festival with me to see Lady Vengeance.

You see, its not all bad

We cant stop here, this is Bat Country!

reply

Geez, I never got in trouble for drugs, movies or anything when I was in high school back in 98-02. lol The only thing that happens to me now is "normal" people question my sanity. hehehehehehe

reply

I was watching suicide club when this girlfriend of mine walked in and watched it with me, she was thourghly disgusted.

She's my wife now.

reply

Well, I just watched Gozu, and man was I freaked out! But that inn keeper was getting on my nerves. Someone should have slapped her senseless.....errr..........some sence into her! Gozu looked sexy in those briefs. lol.

reply

My family and friends seriously think that I've lost it, after I showed them Eraserhead and Happiness.

My mom once stormed into the living room and switched off Pink Floyd's Interstellar Overdrive, screaming at me about the quality of the music all the while. (I was VERY close to being slapped).

My best friend told my sister that I had gone crazy after I lent him Tricky.

My friends and colleagues cannot bear me playing Sigur Ros, Boards of Canada, Mum, Aphex Twin or any dub in the car or on the computer. I have to switch it off every single time anyone enters.

I also do not get any brownie points for slandering a commercial film in a room full of friends who are huge fans of that film.

Caligula and Salo has made me famous (or rather infamous) within my circle of friends.

reply

Dude. All of these things that you do are completely normal. Dub? Floyd? Tricky? Eraserhead? That's - like - _normal_!

Friends, fambly, and colleagues are all frickin' weird. (barring the colleague who lent me Gozu, obvs. He's a cool guy :) )

reply

Man thats far out. I would not have leant it to a friend that would have watched it when there mom and dad would find out. I would have told them watch it kinda on the low its kinda crazy. I would not call it X-Rated because the dude does do it but i would not want my thing to get pulled in... lol later dude hope your mom is cool.
