for all of you who think others overanalyze weird films

I have news for you guys: There is no such state in which you watch an "uninterpreted film". The act of interpretation doesn't just enrich the experience of watching film, it IS the act of "watching" itself. No matter how incapable or unwilling you are of translating your viewing experience in one way or another, you have already assigned meaning to the scenes by default. Even your basest reaction to the film constitutes an act of interpretation: If you just like a film because it's weird and random, you have already made up your mind of how certain signs and sounds in a film constitute the quality of weirdness or randomness.

This is how you read films that are as complex and surreal as Gozu: Try coming up with a couple of interpretations and try to find a common ground between these readings. The film's thematic focus will occur (Obviously, regardless of what you think the film means, this movie plays a lot with biology, motherhood, sexual identity, masculinity etc.) It isn't just a random set of images just because it's surreal, as the filmmakers have made a calculated decision to try to steer your subjectivity in this certain intended direction. Just because there is never just one possible interpretation it doesn't mean that everything will descend into a black hole of infinite meaning if one guy thinks this movie represents a Jungian break from Freud or a re-imagining of the Odyssey or whatever.

STOP killing threads with interesting ideas just just because you lack imagination and critical ability, more discussion is better than no discussion.
