Before they delete us

It was summer 2004 and much too hot. I'd just signed up a few months before on this website called imdb, because of its extensive database with cool message boards; even with one for every TV show and movie, amazing. The year before there had been the Iraq invasion and in 2004 there was going to be a presidential election in the US in November. Everyone everywhere was talking about it. Would the Americans re-elect President Bush? A new film was out from Bowling from Columbine director Michael Moore, very scathing, and the buzz was immense.

I went to see the film and later checked out the message board. It was an incredible hive of activity, and I was soon addicted to reading and posting there. People from all walks of life and political persuasions, men and women, mostly Americans but plenty of other nationalities too, parents and teens, everybody. Discussing, debating, arguing, sourcing and challenging, negating and shouting. It was great, and there I got my first taste of geopolitics - and was hooked.

I remember many people, and can still remember some details. I remember Helen Wheels, and Autumn Leaves from Connecticut. I remember Lamont Smith from New York and Froggie from French Canada, Aussie Atheist, antboy, and AC/DC Chick. I remember Poisoned Dragon (with a Goya quote?) and Number One Alcove from Oregon, a Marine on a ship in Japan whose nick I don't recall, Catlin from New Jersey, a British ex-army officer (the Brigadier, or Grenadier?), a black American lady who was going to join the peace corps, and a French expert of science history. I remember staunch Conservatives, Brian from Canada with his 'shock 'em' threads, and a conservative from New York with a Finnish wife and a new son. I remember so many others, whose nics or features escape me in this moment. I remember lots of great American people, whose posts reached out and stimulated me.

In the end Bush won and many were sorely disappointed. In the meantime, he has gone, there have been a whole 8 years of Obama, and now we have Monsieur Trump. Those happy days posting on this board sometimes seem like yesterday, even though so much time has gone by. Now these boards are to be completely discontinued, finally terminated in a couple of weeks. Soon all of this will definitively become just memories. So a good moment to thank all those who once upon a time in 2004/5 made this board such fun, such a learning experience, and all the best to you all wherever you are. They were really good times! And nobody can delete those.

Cheers, 

I don't remember you, but I posted here for a few years starting I 2005, I think. I was micC/mic_gooflander95.

I think that the conservative guy from New York with the Finnish wife was RJBose.

It could be a balloon. It could be Franky. It could be very fresh and clean. It could be those ways.

I remember you.

Ah micC. How is the old grey man these days? :)

Still have the books you gave me at the Toronto meet up.

PS: this is all in the greatest of fun, but someone dug this up recently...

Good to see someone I remember and one of the few people whom I've met from IMDb. Still grey as ever. How are things?

Those were great times on this board, I miss them a lot, but things must move on.

What books were those again? I'm guessing it would have been some kind of pseudo-science non-fiction books about the supernatural.

And how funny that that ytmnd of me is still circulating the internet. I'd forgotten all about that site.

I remember everyone making a point of replying to your posts in every thread, just so it would fill your email with notifications, Mic. :p

I think that I vaguely remember that. LOL. Because I was outspokenly against 'RWP'ing.

Yes, which just made everyone do it that much more, LOL!

Things are good!

There was one on the Mayan calendar apocalypse. I don't recall what the other one was, but it was along similar lines. You described them accurately. :)

Like the boards, I think YTMND is going to die soon. Such is the way of the world.

Are you ZepFan2? I miss my arguments with ZepFan2 and Froggy. Always found them entertaining.

Good times, indeed! Made many friends that I am still in touch with. The conservative with the Finnish wife was, indeed, RJBose. He was a cool dude and always managed to stay respectful while debating.

My first board when signing up, was Passion of the Christ. I remember several of us starting our own religion. It was entertaining, to say the least.

I saw that they were shutting the thing down later this month, so Bionic Antboy checking in. I made some great friends here, including ones that are friends in the real world now.

They were really good times! And nobody can delete those.

True that!

Hey! Great to see all these posts. Yes, I remember Sparrow-Gav and Zepfan now too, thanks for the mind-jolt guys, and yep, RJBose was the name I was missing. I also remember now NorthernHorizon, also a cool and respectful poster, and Thin-Red-Line. There were so many great people.

I posted as Stevie Madrid back then. I was so saddened to see these boards being closed, I couldn't believeit. It was like a part of history being lost, like when they knock down some lovely old building. It was here that I first got interested in politics and got chatting to Americans.

Would be great to get everyone back for one last fiesta before the boards are finally deleted  (am feeling nostalgic here with mi beer)

NothernHorizon and ThinRedLine were great people, also.

I wonder whatever became of Fear_And_Hate_911 and Mark_Brandon_Read.

Stevie Madrid I remember. :)

The f911 board was nuts back then. I remember it turning into a debate of the war in Iraq. Then you had the ‘04 presidential election. Releasing political propaganda called “documentaries” right before elections was the pattern for a decade or so.

The same kind of crazy partisan political debate took up on the American Sniper board. Now it’s on the Trump board.
