These posts make me want to cry!

Why are most of the posts on this message board so insanely mean spirited? I always find it so sad when a movie flops, especially when as much work was put into it as was put into Delgo. But on top of that, so many posters on here are kicking the poor movie when it's down.

I didn't know anything about the movie until I saw the infamous Yahoo article today. I came straight to imdb to get some info. I was saddened to see that this movie was the writer's and director's very first film. I really hope he/they will get to do more. It seems like Delgo was a special dream for them, and their hopes have been crushed. I really feel badly for them!

Just had to get that all out there...

Well, people in general take some pleasure from reading bad news as long as it doesn't personally effect them. For example: you hear a movie flopped and you laugh, but then if you were a relative of someone involved in producing this movie and they told you about it beforehand, then you saw that it flopped horribly in the news, it wouldn't be so funny.

People like to read about other people's failures because it makes them feel better about their own lives and distract them from their own problems. For example, my father has lymphoma cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy every week..he could very likely die in the next few months. When I read this new story I laughed about it for a little while, is that cause I wish ill will upon those involved? no, its just something to distract me from the soul-crushing pain of reality.

I don't ever laugh when I hear about movies flopping though. I also feel terrible when a new restaurant closes after only 8 months of business, or a writer gets a book published and it doesn't sell any copies. To me, situations like that are the saddest things I've ever heard of. The fact that people laugh at those things is awful to me. I've always had a very tender heart, I guess. I feel sorry very easily for people. And br0ck, I'm sorry about your father too. That is so hard :(

seriously, the world would be a better place if more people are as compassionate as you.

not as much as this terrible movie made me want to cry, somebody out there owes me 20 bucks

This concept is called Schadenfreude. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schadenfreude

Thanks for sharing. Some of my favorite films (Videodrome, Phantom of the Paradise, Decline of Western Civ pt. 1) got *beep* reviews. Doesn't mean they didn't change my life. Now, after reading these reviews, my 1st thought is to go to our record-setting library here in Cols OH to see if they have this film. Yep, I'm going to watch it BECAUSE of these *beep* reviews. Rock on!

I was ready to laugh about this at first when i figured it was just a studio flick. But when I read that the poor guy made the movie practically by himself and it took almost 10 years for him to make, I felt sad for him.

This movie probably isn't something i'd be interested in. But I have to say, compared to most of the other lame CGI talking animal movies coming out now, it can be much worse than those.

reply

Maybe it'll recoup some in the DVD release. It just needs to be marketed better. Or marketed period. Like a lot of others, I never heard of this movie until it opened. I'm glad I did, because I know kids who will like it, if only because of the psuedo-dinosaurs, winged folk (if I say fairies then all the 30 year-old 6 year-olds living in their ma's basement, with their ma on the top bunk, will make some brilliant, fresh remark about...you know, fairies), and fight scenes with swords. Most kids I know love sword fights and grating sidekicks.

It's overwhelming now. I've decided to see this (if it's still in theaters) this weekend, just to show the creators some support. Stand with the 'little guy'.

I admit I've seen much worse and unoriginal animated movies from the major studios but they don't get attacked like this one has been. Even a "classic" like "Cars" was almost a note-for-note remake of "Doc Hollywood" and the recent "Wall-E" had robots that looked very similar to those used in the movie "Short Circuit".

If you're sincere in your comments, then you should appreciate the attention. Being the biggest flop in history, at least it's getting on people's radars. There's a *chance* it will pique some interest as a result. Had it been merely the second biggest flop in history, then it wouldn't be worthy of this level of focus, and it would simply vanish without a trace.

I saw Delgo today out of pity and actually thought it was pretty good. I think the critics are being a little cruel to this movie because of the dated looking CGI. Honestly I'm sick of all the big studio CGI movies. How many times can they rehash the same story? (I mean come on...Bolt had the same "look for the lost friend" story that Toy Story had more then ten years ago)

reply

Honestly, I don't listen to what critics say.
Ebert lost his head a LONG time ago and rottentomatoes simply doesn't define a movie for me.
Bottom line, big name critics don't like what the masses tell them to not like. If a movie flopped, it's automatically horrible. If a movie was a roaring success in ticket sales, it's the best movie of the millenium.
For example, when it comes to CGI, critics like Pixar... why? because it's Pixar... end of story
This looked like a fun and imaginitive movie that got sunk based on terrible advertising (I mean seriously... AM commercial time slots on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon???)
I just might see the movie this weekend, because I really feel for creators of fantasy/adventure films and novels.
And to the people who say that this movie ripped off elements from "Indiana Jones" and "Star Wars"... Lemme recommend a little South Park episode named "The Simpsons Already Did It".

I don't know why people feel sorry for the guy who made this movie. When you make entertainment for a mass audience, by definition it has to be good to be successful. Everyone involved in this film knows this. This is the very foundation of entertainment...your average moviegoer isn't going to shell out six dollars to watch a pile of junk, especially in this economy when people are losing jobs right and left.

The story carries the film, plain and simple, and if they couldn't see the forest for the trees, I hardly see how the producer can blame anyone but himself for this movie's failure. Seems like it was an ego project, just as much as the dreadful Pluto Nash was an ego project for Eddie Murphy.

So let me get this straight: just because the film sucks people are supposed to go see it anyway so the producer can recoup his investment? It costs the same amount of money to write a good story as it does to write a crappy one, and unfortunately no one was on top of that aspect of the film, and the result is box office poison.

People shouldn't have any sympathy for the producer just because he's an outsider, he would have earned everyone's admiration if he had made something spectacular, but let's face it: Hollywood screws up all the time too, and I never read a word of sympathy about some of the garbage that comes out of that crap factory.

"When you make entertainment for a mass audience, by definition it has to be good to be successful."

Britney Spears sold millions of CDs and McDonald's has served a bajillion customers. The "mass audience" doesn't give a damn about quality.

This movie tanked because it was marketed very poorly and received no support from the established film industry, including critics.

It may be a crappy movie, but that hasn't stopped Michael Bay from becoming rich, has it?

We feel bad for the guy because it was a long dream of his. He'd been working on it for a decade, and likely had been dreaming of it for a while before that. He's gotta be friggin crushed. How could you not feel for him?

reply

Well, in my case. I'm not blaming the first week's dismal showing on the film itself. That's why I'd like to go see it and judge for myself whether it's the film or just the lack of marketing (or lack of awareness on the public's part) that caused the record low box office. After I see it and the film really is bad, I'll come here and say so.

So far no one on this thread has pointed out the obvious reason for the glee-- Frddie Prinze Jr.!

For years he has been perceived by all but a few teenage girls (even gay guys aren't that into him--always a bad sign) as a no-talent second-generation celeb whose film career has mostly been a big schmltzfest. Maybe he's a nice person, but by no means should he be top billed on any film with his track record.

Note that even though it's only his voice, the headline was "Freddie Prinze Jr. Movie Biggest Flop Ever". So I think it's fair to say some people are elated that may this guy will no longer be able to coast on...hey, incidentally, what has he been coasting on?

Though maybe he's just dad a run of bad luck, after all sucking doesn't preclude a successful career. Look at Keanu Reeves and Matt McConaghey.

reply

I don't think you can blame Freddie Prinze Jr. for this flopping, it's not like he's in the movie, just voices a character. People didn't hate this movie because of a character's voice.

reply

Yes, I should clarify. I don't think that the movie flopped because of Freddie's voice. What I meant was that I think people seem to revel in its flopitude because they think the talent-challenged FPJ is deserving of a flop, whether it's due to his presence or not.
