So exactly why is it so bad?

Besides the creepy-looking animation? People keep saying it's a rip-off, but of what?

reply

"Star Wars" and "The Dark Crystal" are two movies this one apparently rips off.

reply

Yeah, they were saying it ripped off Indiana Jones too..

reply

And Star Wars wasn't a completely original story either. Lucas borrowed from many sources.

I am not defending the POS that is "Delgo", but seriously, so many movies borrow from so many sources...*shrug*

reply

Yah, but this even had it's own Jar-Jar Binks.

reply

Not bad but not uber special either o.O

reply

LOL and someone involved in it whinged that James Cameron ripped it off when he made Avatar

reply

I never watched it, but I just saw the trailer on youtube... and I can say it is the WORST trailer I've seen in my life. Bar none. I wouldn't have seen it if it came out in a local cinema and I don't care to see it on DVD either.

reply

Hmm, looks cool to me. I imagine George Lucas doesn't give a poop, Jim Henson, who worked with him, wouldn't, and neither should you! I think that this movie purports GOOD feelings and NICENESS and that's what the bad guys out there HATE!!!!

reply

I thought the movie was decent, but the ending was so blah that I knocked off a few stars. Happy ending I suppose, but they ended it quickly - seemingly without thought as to how abruptly the ending might seem.

reply

I thought it was a decent enough movie. Watched it last night with my 18 year old son. We both were entertained, but wouldn't be running out to buy a copy on DVD. Too bad. I loved the animation.

The basic plot is a buffet of stale ideas that were thoroughly beaten to death in the '80s after "Star Wars" energized the fantasy genre: the wonderful magic object that turns out to be a mere tool of the hero's faith in himself; eternal enemies that learn to respect each other through the power of two people's love; and so on. (It also has the whole "good guy helps the bad guy, then the bad guy tries to kill him again, but fate saves the idiot" bit. I can't be the only one who's tired of that.)

All this wouldn't be so bad, if the story offered anything fresh. Remember how the scripts of Ray Harryhausen fantasies were basically the same one repeated again and again, just changing names and monsters like switching out features on a Mr. Potato Head? "Delgo" is exactly like that, plugging all these old ideas into a rotten tuber base. Only the weak characters and ho-hum beasties aren't good enough to let the script get away with it.

But the real killer is the CGI. It's all very elaborately designed, but it's also poorly rendered and grotesquely ugly. The character designs hurt to look at. When your hero looks like I Was A Scrawny Teen-Age Newt, he'd better have more going for him than being a twentieth-generation Early Luke Skywalker knockoff.
