Why are rock stars always drugged up Brits?

In TV shows and movies this seems to always be true. If you have to have a teen meet or obsess over a rock star, they're always a Brit who's blitzed out of his mind on either drugs or booze.

Why this trope? Are there no American rock stars?

Yay finally someone else commenting on this board :)

I guess because they want them to allude to the stereotypical big rock bands.. The Rolling Stones, The Beatles? The time when rock and roll was really big and British rock and roll was everywhere.

Never saw this movie but I always like the main song “That Girl”. Super catchy.

I completely see what you're saying lucy. I guess I just wonder why it has to be a stereotype. It would be more believable if rock stars in movies were characters instead of caricatures.

And it's not like the Brits have a corner on the market of drugged up, out of it rock stars. There's people like Kurt Cobain, Steven Tyler, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Iggy Pop, most of Guns n' Roses, and pretty much everyone in Motley Crue. And there's many others not listed here.
