2 things that bugged me

OK, I will start off by saying that I LOVE this movie, watch it all the time. However, here are two things that really bugged me.

1. Kiran is SUCH a mean spirited person, I can't believe that no one would say anything to her when she invites them to her home in London and then says that Balraj isn't there. It's so obviously witchy (with a "B" instead of a "W") but no one says a word.

2. The other thing that bugs me is that if Johnny Wickham truly got Darcy's sister pregnant and then ruined her life and all that, there is NO WAY he would be that civil around him and let the truth stay quiet all that time with Lalita. It was just way too contrived for me. He's so passive around Wickham, that would just never happen, you know?

OK, venting over, I still LOVE this movie!

If you read Pride and Prejudice or have seen the other movies you will see why Kiran's character is the way she is. She doesn't want her brother involved with Jaya and will do what she can to keep them apart.
I thought she was actually pretty nice compared with the book and other movies.

2. It is called honor, and integrity! Why would he want to spread his sisters private life around for everyone to know about. He loves her dearly. In the book Darcy patches things up and takes the brunt of expense and the blame for not telling (Elizabeth) Lalita about Wickham.

I just found this movie and just love it!

Well he could certainly have acted more hateful towards Johnny and not spilled his family's secrets.

But I do take all of your points, and admittedly I have not read Jane Austen's novel (although I have really meant to!) nor seen any of the Pride and Prejudice films. Thanks for the explanations.

I didn't realise that Will's sister got pregnant.

You're obviously a more passionate than polite person, which is okay, but can you accept that there are people out there who are more controlled about their emotions? Because I think the rest of the world would not react the way you seem to think they should. If everyone went around calling out bitchy behavior we'd have WAAAAY more fighting than we have now. As for Darcy not jumping Will as soon as he saw him, he probably has some respect for the way that Will could ruin his sister's reputation. Some people are good at self control.

Why settle with words what you can settle with a flamethrower?

reply

Self control is the key. If he 'jumped' Johnny right off the bat he would be no better then him and would lower his standards down to his. Smart Darcy. Indira looks good in a bikini.

Also, to address point 2, Lalita heard Johnny's story before Darcy realised that she knew him. If Darcy had gone to Lalita afterwards, with 'Oh what a swine he is' it would have led Lalita to believe Johnny's story, and possibly pushed her closer to him.

Our office Anglophile says Will did behave in the appropriate manner. He gave Wickham "the cut direct". He acknowledged he saw him, and then he very pointedly turned his head away. In some social circles, that is a highly effective insult.

In different cultures, and in different segments of American culture, restraint and circumspection, are highly valued characteristics.

People do not, repeat, do not air their dirty laundry in public. They don't talk about their feelings to strangers, do not discuss personal issues to the media, and you would never know that anything other than polite conversation ever goes on in their homes.

As to meeting people in public or social gatherings that have harmed them in anyway? Judith Martin/Miss Manners has a hilarious column about the various levels of how you behave when meeting someone you dislike and even loathe in a social setting.

True that.

Many things can be preserved in alcohol. Dignity isn’t one of them.

The two objections you have are valid. However, as you know, this is an adaptation of the JA classic. A lot of water has flowed down Thames since the novel was written. At that time, as we all know. it was ruinous for a girl to have an affair before marriage. So if it did happen, it was hushed. The family members kept special care to keep it under covers. This was one reason the Darcy of the novel kept the affair in private. (It was also because of his reserved nature.)

Now-a-days for a woman, having an affair translates to having a boy friend, and it is considered quite natural to have one. That's why Gurindhar Chadha introduced the pregnant thing. It became awkward due to the remote setting it refers to.

and yes Kiran was very mean, but just like the other situation, many prestigious women were full time employed in ruining marriages, and so someone like Kiran would be a familiar figure in the JA atmosphere, which seems very awkward today.

Kiran was this movie's equivalent of Pride & Prejudice's Caroline Bingley, who is against her brother's relationship with Jane Bennett due to social status.
