Hurting Kids

Both the scene with Jack and his kids by the river, and with Edith and her daughter by the train tracks gave me a bad feeling, like something bad was going happen. It seems I wasn't the only one to feel that way, and I think there's something there.

Now to me, it seemed like the writer was trying to get a point across about how all the things that were going on with the parents were greatly effecting their children. So that fear of Jack hurting his kids and Edith as well is real because they in fact are. Just in an indirect way, but still as painful and damaging.

I think the kids play a really important part, and the fact that none of the parents seem to care about the kids at all is reflected in those scenes.

What does everyone else think?

True, its the first and probably only scene where the children are considered with one of the errant parents and there is an honest realization of the pain that would be caused to them by his actions. No words are spoken but we can feel his pain in having finally realized the true consequences of what he had set out to do.

Which causes me to ponder over the very next scene in which Jack returns with his kids and finds Terry waiting with his bag packed. When questioned, he tells her that he wants to stay not just for the kids. I wonder if he was being completely truthful about that as deep down inside he might have wanted to stay more for the kids indeed than for anything else. Remember, during one of the voice-overs he tells us that he had started to wonder if this life of many roles (father, husband, teacher, etc.) that he had chosen was indeed the one that he wanted to lead, maybe he had decided that he wanted to lead a different one (perhaps with Edith) but changed his mind during his time alone with his children.

His life with Edith would not have been any better, in fact it would have been worse. He still would have had to deal with his soon to be Ex and dual households for his kids, Hank, and Hank's kid. Two best friends that know hate each other. Terry certainly would not be on board with her kids being near Edith as well, as Hank having issues with Jack.

Something I noticed no one is talking about, One cheater is keeping his family together the other is splitting hers up.

he definitely had an andrea yates moment by the river.

i'm not a parent but i get the feeling that sometimes when things aren't going the way you idealized, the idea of just throwing it all away can be just a tiny bit tempting. feeling like your marriage failed and you failed...i got the feeling from time to time that my own mother was thinking about dark things like that because she was so overwhelmed and a little crazy.
