I was going to bail too, but stuck it out, NOT worth it, you made the right decision. I couldn't get into the characters or situations either, just didn't give a damn what happened to them.

If you went to the trouble of renting it, may as well watch the 2 episodes mentioned in the previous post, they are stand alone good ones, the rest...blah.

What I love about Bryan Fuller's shows is that they're all different from each other yet you can tell he made them.

I personally love this show. I think the wackiness of the every situation makes the show worth while, and I love Jaye's whatever personality.

Plus, come on... Hotties galore. Lee Pace and Tryon Lietso.

I agree with you OP. While I like Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me, I flat-out disliked Wonderfalls. The only thing good about this show are the character of Jaye played brilliantly by Dhavernas and the previously mentioned two episodes . As I was about to stop watching the series, after Crime Dog I decided to go on, which in hindsight was a bad decision and a complete waste of time. I was pretty bummed out by the fact that they underused Lee Pace. He was a definite highlight of the Crime Dog episode, the interrogation scenes were hilarious.

The rest of the characters sucked. While Mahandra was bearable and didn't annoy me, Jay's family was made out of douschebags. Her stuck-up mother and bitchy sister, along with henpecked father, brought the show down severly. And while Eric was a good character in the beggining, his neediness in the later episodes was awful. Suprisingly, all of the characters put together are less annoying than the actress who played Sharon, just watch the DVD featurette. Someone should bitch-slap her hard.

It's interesting how TV shows will strike a chord with some viewers and not with others. I loved Pushing Daisies and liked Wonderfalls, but I really, really disliked George in Dead Like Me. Because of the protagonist's apathic and unwilling attitude, I just couldn't enjoy that show at all.

reply

wow, now i find that very interesting. I thought dead like me was completely awesome, I also thought George and J were a lot alike. Both being somewhat whiny and unlikable in the beginning and finding self awareness and change as the show goes along. In the end George had to die to learn how to live. J was well on her way to a similar type awakening and change but the show was canceled. Dead like me was also canceled way before it's time that one was very strange indeed.

Yes, I agree George and Jaye had some things in common. It seems Bryan Fuller in the beginning liked this kind of character as protagonist, but then changed it in Pushing Daisies. For those similarities, I can't say I liked Jaye completely, as some things about her bothered me.

But I noticed some important differences. Jaye was more of a grown-up. She held a job, had a car and her own home, had a friend, and had a reasonably healthy relationship with her family. She also took the initiative to begin a relationship with a man and accepted the role the muses gave her, while others would have refused. And Jaye was much more beautiful than George.

George, on the other hand, had an apathic and constantly fed-up attitude that simply drove me nuts, and only took her job as a reaper because it was inevitable. Her monotone narration showed she was judgmental of other people, like Delores Herbig and her positive attitude. And all the reapers seemed cynical towards one another so that mood didn't captivate me. Again this is one more personal case of when a show goes well with you or not.

You are correct about J being more grown up and responsible, It's been a while since I've watched the show but as I recall George was only 18 when she died and much like a lot of 18 year olds she still had a way to go, by the end of the second season she had come a long way and to was very likable. I can't really see how George was more judgmental than J as J hammered everyone as an annoyance especially Gretchen and would only be involved when the muses made her, as a matter of fact at least one time she ignored them and felt the consequences were to bad to ignore them again. So it wasn't like she accepted them willingly more so they were forced upon her. So in my opinion the two were almost identical.

Maybe George just rubbed me the wrong way for some personal reason. George and Jaye definitely had similarities, after all were created by the same guy. But I wouldn't say they were almost identical. First, Jaye was much prettier, and for a guy, which I am, that's important. And she was older, so with more definition in life. I liked the way Jaye related with her family; she wanted distance, but clearly loved them. I remember little about George because I saw the show a very long time ago, but as I recall she had a much more problematic relationship with her family.

Jaye was hesitant to follow her mission with the muses, but I liked the way she was engajed in helping the nun or the real barrel lady, and not because the muses wanted. George had a much more amorphous attitude towards things in general (for the little I remember of her), and that really bothered me.

But I have to admit even though I liked Wonderfalls, young characters who respond "Whatever" with apathy when they are not pleased with something are not exactly characters I really like.

I can't comment on these other shows, as I've never seen them. But looking at your posts, I too would like to extend a friendly virtual hand and invite you to join us on our next escapade into TV land.

yep for a guy looks are important, being a guy myself i happen to think George was better looking than J but to each his own, J definitely had more definition in her life and was a more well rounded character. George had more trouble relating to her family because they were dysfunctional. Her mother was very controlling and bitchy and her father was fooling around with a student at college. As the show progresses she really begins to get it and starts really apreciating what she had when she was living missing both her mother and her sister and even began protecting them as the show went on. I feel if Wonder Falls had kept going it had potential to achieve something closer to this. One big handicap WF had was it was network and DLM was showtime, big diff when it comes to writing.
I too would like to second fasco and invite you to come along with us as we watch what ever we are going to watch. One thing about this group, once we start, we always finish, good, bad, or mediocre. I would also like to second fascos plea to DT...Man it just aint gonna be quite the same. If you can possibly work it in it would be nice if you stayed with us.

I really appreciate the invitation and am thinking about it. As a TV fan it would be an interesting thing to try. I noticed the shows selected as options are on netflix (ntflx?), something I've never used, but once I tried and it seemed I had to become a member or something. I never tried after that. Is it complicated? Free? And most importantly, does it work outside the US? (I live in Brazil.)

There may be alternatives, depending on what is chosen.

Well, I'd like to join then. Where do I sign? But remember I don't get hulu and other websites restricted for use in the US only.

Daremos um jeitinho então!

can you get netflix down in brazil? cause that site is great to watch stuff. but you could also download it of off certain sites. oh and wonderfalls the whole series is on youtube

I can't get netflix because they ask for a US address for delivery and you can't sign up without that, and I'd need an international credit card. I think the service is meant to be viewed in the US only, though on the website they have one link for Canada. I've found a Brazilian version of Netflix, but it's just for movies.

But I've finished downloading the entire series using a torrent, so this time it'll be no problem. I usually find my shows to watch in websites like surfthechannel.com, but they only have newer shows. I see you guys like old and exotic TV shows, so it'll always be difficult for me to follow.

I loved Pushing Daisies, have never seen Dead Like Me, and really like Wonderfalls. Some of the other comments have referred to liking Lee Pace, I have to disagree, I don't like him at all on Wonderfalls, but loved him on Pushing Daisies. I wish Lee Pace and Caroline Dhavernas were more prevalent in t.v. and film. I also see a lot of Tyron Leitso or maybe his Wonderfalls character in Lee Pace's character in Pushing Daisies.

reply

Lee Pace was great in Wonderfalls! He and Caroline had great chemistry and their character's relationship was special in that it frustrated Aaron's atheism and study of comparative religion. He was the only person who believed what was happening to Jaye.

How can you forget that awesome line in "Wound-Up Penguin": "Well, some folks believe that early man’s gut instinct was God telling our ancestors to fight, flee or fu- …uuun-have."

Interesting. I also loved Pushing Daisies, and I like this one so far. Of course I've only seen episode one.

Interesting. I like both, Daisies a bit more. But then that's why they make chocolate and vanilla.
