Creepy 'Guest Appearance'

I bought the DVD a couple of days ago and I love the show.

But it creeps me out that in that scene when Larry jumps up against the fence quite early in the episode 'Roadtrip' (when the alarm goes off and the search lights are switched on) the German commands shouted at Larry (that sound like a guard is yelling them over a megaphone) are actually cuts from a taped Hitler speech.

Does anyone know if that was ever commented about in the press or on the internet somwhere?

Are you sure? What exactly makes you think it is specifically Hitler? For one, it does not sound like him at all to me. (Not like I am a Hitler expert or anything.)

I had to wait a day or so to respond to this because I just received my DVD Monday.

Anyway, it does sound like a very specific nazi Germany-style recording, but...

So, if you were able to specify as to which/where speech it was, I am sure I could dig up more information on it. Otherwise, I have not found a single mention of it anywhere. I would be interested in knowing exactly what it was. Oh, and the subtitles of course do not display what was said (in German or otherwise).

For the record, I am inclined to believe that FotP would have "gone there". They seem to have the sexual innuendo pretty down pat.

I am pretty sure. I know that the sentences are taken from a Nazi speech; they go something like that:

"vor uns liegt Deutschland"
"in uns marschiert Deutschland"
"hinter uns kommt Deutschland"

I think two of those three are used in that scene - with one of them being repeated.

I can't access my DVD right now; and German law makes it practically impossible for me to google for the exact quote.

But I am pretty sure it is Hitler's voice; otherwise they would have had to hire someone to re-enact the speech with a voice similar to Hitler - a lot of work if you just want to use it in a pretty minor scene of some animated series.

I am just curious if the producer/director/writer of that episode knew that it was a Hitler sound clip they were using, or if some junior staff with a reduced sense of judgement played the clip into their hands (as a sort of prank) because they thought that was somehow witty or funny.

Sorry it took so long in getting back to you, but I e-mailed a chap I know at Dreamworks and asked him how I might go about finding that specific information out.

His response was basically he has no clue. He did say that he was positive that nothing like that was in the show. I asked my Oma to listen to it and she assures me it is in fact Hitler or at least something from the "Nazi era".

I said... what if I were wanting to pursue legal action against the distribution of the material (because I am in fact, sure that the footage *is* in the show and on the DVD), on the grounds that it is of course *highly* offensive to some.

His response was basically he has no clue. : |

Needless to say, I have not found *anything* that talks about it in the show and I somehow wonder if that was not their intention. That is to say I am sure none of the animators (like my thick-headed friend) rushed to boards exclaiming how the sound guys put some awesome Nazi war-time audio to their uber-lion animation.

I would be interested in seeing/hearing/finding more information on this. It is an odd thing not to be able to find something on the internet nowadays. Especially something like this... odd.

I don't think anyone could really complain, since footage like that has been used in comedy at least since Monty Python's Flying Circus.
The thing that upset me slightly was that the fence, the searchlights and the dog-barks (I thik there were some - or it's just my vivid imagination) gave the scene a "camp" atmosphere anyway.
And since no-one talked about it in the commentaries I felt sure that it had crept in there unnoticed.

Unchecked material in foreign languages must get through all the time. In the Buffy opening bit, they always show bits of German writing. Some of that is old - but most of it is a letter from the 50s or 60s in which someone seems to ask another person boring stuff about the visit of somebody's sister. Not something that says "spooky" or "Gothic" to me...

There are Nazi documentaries on the telly 24/7 - one of these days I'll come across bits of the speech by accident, and maybe that will give me an idea what year we are talking about here. That might help to find it. Right now I have no clue - could be basically anything between the late 20s and 1944.

Anyway... I will list some main points then gracefully shove off.

1. "a chap I know..." i.e. friend. So instead of focusing so much time manifesting some moronic statement per word, you could try paying attention to what you read.

2. I was summarizing the fact that I asked him how one could get ahold of that information. Insistence is a reliable method for attaining information. An example of this would have been you *insisting* on understanding what I wrote.

Since you ended that tirade with the seemingly obligatory "smiley", I thought it would prove some level of courteousness by saying "I do not mean to offend, nor further incite you to argue with me or debate this ridiculous matter further. However, like most on this site and I believe proven by your desire to waste your time and mine, I eagerly await more banter."

Well, it took some time...

the soundbite in question is from the Reichsparteitag of 1934 and can be found in Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph des Willens (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0025913/) - making it easily obtainable for whoever put it into FotP.

If you look up the Triumph des Willens entry at wikipedia and click on the Google Video link they've got near the bottom, you'll find the passage at about 53'10'' in.

I didn't say it was offensive, I said it was 'creepy' - and thus dancing on the borderline to what some (other) people might see as offensive.
I was more intrigued by the "Murphy's Law" possibility that someone in production might have been looking for an aggressive sounding German sound-bite and might have ended up with a Hitler sound-bite by mistake, without even knowing it to this day. That's why I asked if anyone has heard this ever having been commented on before.

Hey, and since you know this guy at DreamWorks, can you also ask him if he can try bringing back Father of the Pride with new seasons and episodes and bring Hunter back as the young cub he always was and with a new child voice actor that sounds like Daryl Sabara?
