Why so short???

I notice the run time according to IMDb is 109 minutes in the U.K. but only 75 minutes in France and 76 minutes in the U.S. What?!? That's a tremendous amount of movie to be cut! Does anyone know what was cut? Or is that figure of 109 minutes for the U.K. not correct? In any case, expect a lot of negative feedback from movie audiences in the U.S. if they're stuck paying full price for a movie which lasts just over an hour.

Who knows which running time is correct. IMDB has made mistakes. It is possible that sense this is a British film that there were jokes that only the brits would understand or find funny.

As far at the running time being 76 minutes thats a life time for animated movies. Very few Disney animated movie has been over 90 minutes.

Snow White: 83 minutes

Bambi: 70 minutes

Pinocchio: 88 minutes

Lion King: 89 minutes

Beauty and the Beast: 84 minutes (Although lengthened to 90 minutes for a Special Edition)

"Why aren't they longer?", quote from unknown executive from United Artist (Walt Disney Pictures original distribution partner)

"You cannot hold a child's attention for more than 90 minutes.", quote by Walt Disney (The artistic quote)

"At $100.00 per minute of animation [1930's/40's dollars] you cannot make a animated movie longer than 90 minutes.", quote by Roy Disney Chef Financial Officer of Walt Disney Studios (The money quote)

I don't know; if they're cutting it because of the Brit jokes, then I must say that it's sorta annoying. If that's the case, I hope we'll get the longer version on DVD.

reply

The 109 minutes must be a mistake. The Times of London review from when it was released in the UK back in March lists it as 78 minutes long.

reply

I saw a sneek preview in Canada and we estimated it to only be 60 minutes long (before credits). 70 minutes max. It didn't feel overly short though.

If they cut out all the good British jokes, there's no way I'm seeing this. I want to see it for British humor.

If you're mad when you're pissed off, does that mean you're happy when you're pissed on?

reply

I enjoy good British humor but sadly this movie had none, atleast none in the 72 min version I saw.

DH (British) thinks that in Britain they are obliged to report the running time from the movie start time - i.e., including all the previews. If you are in the US and you check the times, a movie billed as a 5pm start time actually doesn't start until about 5:20; the rest is all previews.

Perhaps there were scenes they had to delete in order to it to hit theaters in America and then DVD/video. Who knows?

I'm kinda glad Valient was short. I didn't enjoy it too much. Just not my kind of movie, I guess.

My reason as to why animated films run shorter than live action films is because animation took more time and/or money, but I'm not sure if that's the REAL reason. I've only just assumed. Like with the now-obsolete hand drawn cartoons, they took several years to produce and CGI isn't really cheap. So ya. I'm not sure though.

Anyhow, I also had to comment because your subject is my username and I just found that amusing. (I've had this username for about 4 years. it's lame).
