What is this? When will it be released?

What is this movie? WHy doesn't it have a release date?

reply

Since you posted this quite a while ago, you're probably aware by now that this is Godard's latest film, and is being released on 19th May at Cannes.
What I'd like to know is when it will be released in the UK - a reliable source told me that it has secured distrubution here, but the question is WHEN?!

reply

This is a wonderful movie. It has been released two weeks ago in France and last week in Switzerland, where I live. I've seen it this evening in fact :-) And I've written a review, it will probably be posted on the Notre Musique page tomorrow. It is sadly quite unlikely that the movie will be released worldwide because the audience does not seem to be interested in intelligent movies like this one, and this wonderful piece of cinema sadly seems to be a commercial failure. I really really hope for you it will be released in the U.S. however. I'll keep my fingers crossed

reply

With all due respect to Godard, for him the term 'commercial failure' doesn't apply. The last time he made a film that was 'commercial' and not low-budget, artsy, or experimental, was Contempt. I'm sure in a year more or less it'll get a release, I just wish I knew a ballpark figure on when. When it does, I'll go to see it, even if it's in the dankest, worst part of NYC imaginable (and, luckily, NYC and LA usually get movies that don't get wide releases).

Good to see other Godard fans here. When I read his new film was playing at the Toronto Film Fest this year, I almost peed myself. To me, a new Godard is big news and something I always look foward to. Does anyone know if this has American distribution yet? I didn't get to see his 2001 "Eloge D'Amour" until 2002 and hopefully I'll see this one soon.

reply

I see what you're getting at, but I'd still say Contempt was "arty" and experimental...I'm not sure at what point Contempt acquired the reputation of being a 'mainstream' movie (though I believe it got a wide release at the time).

Still, to say Contempt doesn't qualify as experimental, I think, is to give the film short shrift.

reply

It was experimental for the average movie, don't get me wrong. But it's appeal was, with maybe the exception of Breathless, was the widest reaching.

Since the film does have Wellspring as its U.S. distributor, it should be released (eventually) in the major markets. While it may not get a wide release since Wellspring is a small, but eclectic company, it should be out on DVD eventually. However if you have a chance to see it on big screen, make the effort since it is visually stunning.

reply

I wrote to Wellspring this weekend to inquire if and when NOTRE MUSIQUE will play in the San Francisco Bay area, where I live. I was told to expect it near the beginning of 2005. Presumably, an early '05 release applies to the other major markets, as well. Hope this helps.

i just checked the "release dates" page here on imdb and it's listed for

so take that as you will.

i just saw this film in Pittsburgh PA , USA on November 12, 2004 at the Pittsburgh film festival. What a beautiful film. Sad, poignant, and so alive with philosophy. Peace every one, peace. That's all we really want.........

Godard is one of the most important original directors alive.

GAH! I Want to see this movie SO BAD! There's too few philosophical, thought-provoking films out there nowadays. Ever since Amelie i LOVE french movies. They're all just gorgeous. You can pause at any time and its a work of art.
