The Island

If it was as big as it had to have been in all three movies, it would have been discovered by Europeans long before the 1930's.

What says anyone else here?

reply

Its just a movie. Hey, the world needs a bit of mystery

reply

Exactly!

Well, it actually had been discovered. The problem is that few people survived the encounter. Remember, Carl Denham specifically set out to find it because he had heard about it. And when he revealed this to the ship's crew, they told him what they had heard about it.

Perhaps your query is better suited for the 1976 version, where the explanation was the perpetual fog bank and clouds that kept it hidden. That was less believable.

But also in the 2005 version the island was located in a very remote part of the ocean, well outside of established shipping lanes.

The island was very remote; that I grant. Even so, it had to have been enormous, so its' discovery by the West would have been almost certain. And Englehorn flat out told Denham that there was nothing out where Denham wanted to go.

However, like you hint at, several members of the crew, seemed to have heard rumbles of its' existence.

How big WAS Skull Island, is it mentioned anywhere? Because even for a relatively large island, that place had a huge range of massive predators whose populations had seemingly survived millions of years of isolation. Artistic licence/suspension of belief is one thing, but the variety of top of the food chain carnivores which Jackson threw in here was beyond ridiculous.

reply

In the Skull Island movie John Reilly said you can't get to the north end in 3 days by foot. They took the boat. I think the islans or main large one is as big as Australia.

reply

As big as AUSTRALIA? Surely it's meant to be more like Sumatra/Java sized, at most? Approaching from the sea it doesn't suggest the coastline of a continent.
