Don't understand the natives....need some opinions please.

I'm only an hour in, and I love the beautiful visuals, and the cast, but we just escaped the island and I'm confused. It looks like the natives are made up of shipwrecked people who intermingled....anyone else think that? Some white, some black, some "Sumatran or whatever's near", different races from who knows how far back? Any ideas? Thanks!

reply

No, don't think so at all, they're clearly supposed to be an ancient civilization, that is perhaps on the verge of dying out, with no connection and similarity to the outside world. However I also thought that maybe there were different ethnicities among them, maybe even white (the kid?), and there was heavy make-up. However they ultimately had all the same skin-colour and look. They probably deliberately made them look unidentifiable.

Its best to fast forward thru the racist part of this movie and not ask any questions

reply

Racist? It's a made up ethnic group not based on any current ethnic group we have.

reply

I hate seeing brown skin people live in a primitive environment

reply

What's primitive to you? And they're black but you'll notice they didn't use black actors but European and polynesian actors with darker paint, that's because they were not imitating any particular ethnic group but invented a whole new group.

And fyi png was cannibal just in the 20th century.

reply

The natives are some forgotten tribe, they're not melanesian nor are they papuans or Polynesians. Whoever they are, they have been isolated for a long time on that island.
