Hope you're still looking.

The opera's Leoncavallo's Pagliacci

It's about a clown whose actress wife cheats on him with another man. He makes others laugh while he's sad inside. And their lives crash.

I think that was supposed to be the significance to Joey who didn't know what it was about, kinda like us.

Hope that was helpful.

moses29, are you Italian? I mean how else would you know the opera's name & plot?

reply

Pagliacci is one of the most famous operas ever. I'm not Italian and I knew it as soon as it was sung. Also the song he sings is pretty famous too

reply

i don't know its meaning but i do know that the same opera was in the untouchables and robert deniro cries while watching it, it might have been a reference to that

It's a pretty famous piece, they also used it in a Seinfeld episode.

Right, the aria is from Pagliacci By Leoncavallo. It is "vesti la giubba" sung by Canio who was the clown in the opera. He must entertain the customers although his heart is breaking because of his wife's infidelity. Canio was Caruso's favorite role and he was often photographed in a clown costume.Probably more than you wanted to know. Ciao.
