Really wrong

Are they just trying to make a quick buck?

Now I have much respect for Yao for coming from nowhere to somewhere however he isn't a talented player. There are so many more talented players in the NBA. Yao is a popular pick when the public votes... because of the population of China. If I was Chinese i'd probally vote Yao too, not to forget their political situation.

I swear this'll fail. I wish people would stop going on about Yao. The only reason he is in the NBA is his height. He cannot play.

Being Chinese and from Houston this post may contain some bias but...

Yao does have a good record. He not MJ or Lebron he has some good stats. (Granted he needs to have some agression on the court.)

Docs are not usually big money makers. However with the entry of Micheal Moore a couple years ago documentries have gain some popularity, depending on the topic. I could see some big numbers for this doc, for the first couple of weeks.

Yao for the most is a private person. He doesn't talk in front of the camera a lot (or put on the front page of tabloids either). Also he comes under unique circumstances: coming from a different country and culture, needing to learn another laguage, etc.

Just my twi cents.

I see... but if you weren't Chinese or weren't from Houston would you buy it? I mean for other reasons than nostalgia.

I haven't actually met someone who likes him for his ability yet (im sure there are many out there, but I havent met any).

Im an asian teenager currently living in Australia. I dont think the purpose of the documentary was to bring in quick bucks. I think the author probably had respect for Yao Ming or found him fascinating and wanted to follow up on his life. im not quite sure what your stance on the definition of talent. But searching it up on google its, "Natural endowment or ability of a superior quality". You had recognized his height( 7 foot 6), is that not a talent? I mean, when he was fouteen he was already (6 foot 8) the size of Tracy Mcgrady right now ( 2.03m) is who is even considered overgrown Nba wise for a guard and Yao ming could dunk. The only problem with his jumping right now in the Nba is because his leg was broken multiple times in the same place. However, i do agree its not his ability in basketball that makes him shine, i think its his uniqueness in many different aspects. Firstly the obvious, his Chinese. Probably the only Chinese international star that is famous for basketball, a game that is not slapstick like diving or ping pong in China's whole history. Secondly his journey while he wasnt palying international basketball or in the NBA. One fond story was Yao and Liu wei ( China's Point Guard, now in sacremento king's training camp) going to Nike's basketball camp in Paris where him and Liu wei had 150 Yuan on them ( 20$ Us ? ) and eating 99c cheeseburgers for a month and then having to borrow money from others in the camp to survive the remaining two months. I think i feel for him because im Chinese. I mean i dont feel anything for Dirk Nowitzski or Ginobili whilst German or Europeans might be crazy about them but not Yao Ming. Its pretty obvious CHina's sport is a laughing matter and against all the odds we have a player in the NBA thats actually not too bad and averages 18.7 points a game as a sophomore. Sure he might not be as dynamic as lebrone james or amare stoudamire, but his a keen learner and his shooting percentage has risen around 15% since his rookie years.

Seen the movie, and i loved it. you dont know someone until its put right in front of your face, hes got a great personality and is smart as heck. It kind of makes you get to know him. great film, great yao.

I'm not chinese, nor do I watch basketball. I am interested in this doc though. It seems like it has a good story. I think they chose Yao becuase he has the most interesting story, not because he's the best player.

Face it, the Chinese are not known for playing basketball in America. Most stereotypes in America view Asians as being extremely short and unathletic in some degree. Watch the movie "Blue Chips". Near the end of the movie, the coach played by Nick Nolte makes a derogatory comment that a billion $#@! over there couldn't give a FCK about what's going on right here (referring to their ball game). Now, here comes this 7'6" Chinese (breaking the stereotypical height barrier) basketball player named Yao Ming (breaking the stereotypical unathletic barrier) trying to transition from his native country to America. I'm sure 10 years ago you'd probably wouldn't even think the words "Chinese" and "basketball" associated in the American vocabulary. Anyhow, I hope they release this on DVD soon cause I didn't get a chance to watch it in theaters and it would be great to own it. I would be surprised if they made a sequel to Blue Chips and fixed that racist attitude.

Even if they took out internet Vote, Yao Ming would be starter as he got the most votes in NBA Arenas.

Shaq's 05-06 numbers

Numerous Player of the Week and Player of the Month Awards for Yao.

It is obvious that Yao is improving quite steadily. Ever since the 2006 ALL STAR GAME, YAO MING has been one of the MOST dominate players in the NBA. Anyone following the league know this. Even through the difficulty of the transition of culture and language Yao has improved quite dramatically and steadily. If you discredit this transition it is obvious you have never been to another country and tried to live there for a long period of time. Basketball is a game that heavily relies on the spoken languange, and the cultural differences and teachings of China nd the US are drastically different. I thought maybe people will understand this from watching this documentary. But as with all Documentaries there are always sceptics and people questioning the events and truthfulness behind the story, but I sh8t you not, this transition is more difficult than it seems. Yao Mings improvements have been outstanding. He is still young and he seems to be more and more comfortable with the game here as shown by he's recent performance. If hes recent performance is any indicator of hes future he will be one of the best if not the best center in the league beginning next year. But i already think he is the best center in the league this year. Hes numbers are better than ALL of the centers in the League as of right now.

Part of the fact that the documentary was made is because it documents a very important time in NBA history, the first international player to be drafted at number one pick... and you say that Yao cannot play and he is only there because of his height... well look at someone like Sean Bradley. He has drafted at number one and is also 7 foot 6. However, he was a dud, a very terrible player so has basically vanished. If Yao was that terrible, he wouldn't still be a starting centre for the Houston Rockets.

Everyone talks about yao becuase what he has done has never been accomplished the amount of pressure he has is incredible. I think its a really intresting movie for basketball fans and people who juss want to learn about basketball in genereal. That last comment PieMAster made was really stupid "I swear this'll fail. I wish people would stop going on about Yao.The only reason he is in the NBA is his height. He cannot play" If he couldnt play he would not be the #1 pick most NBA teams are not stupid when they have pick #1, he made it cuz hes got talent. The NBA's centers suck SHAQ is not even a major factor anymore theres no one else, YAO is the best center in the NBA, hes getting better and better every year.
