both are unacceptably ugly

Probably that was intentional to hire Bettany and Dunst who are both so ugly. Bettany can work in a horror movie as mutant monster, not as romantic tennis hero. Dunst looked sick, dopey, puffy, unattractive, like a dog. They couldn't even afford to buy some makeup for this character.
