when is this supposed to take place?

can anyone give me an estimate?

techincally i think it's modern day, but i don't think you're supposed to focus on that since there aren't a lot of clues. I think it supposed to have more of a mythological/timeless feel.

Well, the only giveaway I saw was that they had a 1980's station wagon that looked like it was weathered to hell and beaten down. I figure that could place the film in the 1990's or even modern day. I think DGG plays on the modern ignorance to the fact that people still live, quite happily, in such incredibly rural and "grimy" settings.

I love the way the era is played with so much. It's shot in such a 1970s style and it may be present day but i doubt it. when John is watching the choir on TV their hairstyles are way to retro to be contemporary. but i think that really works, it makes the story, already very fairytale like, seem even more timeless.

That's a good question. There was a large George Foreman grill in the kitchen (you can see it in the background in a couple different scenes) so it couldn't have been that long ago.

I was curious myself. Most of the cars seen in the film are from the late 70's/early 80's. However, I did notice some newer models in the junkyard scene.

I posted that OP about 4yrs ago and in that time I've completely forgotten the movie which is interesting since I don't think I've ever completely forgot seeing a flick
