Anne The Opportunist

Apparently, she profited nicely because of Ted Bundy. I despise people who cash in on serial killers, I think they're pretty vile themselves. Without Ted, Anne would be a nobody.

Not true. She was a cop and wrote for a detective mag, they wanted her to write about these killings...she worked at the crisis hotline with Ted, she didn't know at first it was the same person.

Do you condemn all true-crime writers equally?

I think 'vile' should be reserved for the women who fawned over him after he was charged. He had groupies for god's sake, what the hell is wrong with them?

And people who make movies about serial killers profit, too - from those who buy or rent them, or watch them on pay-per-view, on premium movie channels, etc., etc.

No! Don't despite her! She's awesome. Anne Rule is a tight, well-organized, engaging and can't-put-it-down true crime book genius. She gave us true crime when nobody had the slightest notion of "forensics" or CSI or SVU or Criminal Minds TV shows...!

Nobody tells a story like Anne Rule. NOBODY. She writes with a oertain confidence in you, the reader. She doesn't dummy-it-down. And that's gratifying. You feel like a detective when you read her stuff. So...YES: I'm a big fan. Yes: Seattle cop at one time. Yes: wrote for True Detective magazine (as "Andy Stack.") She REALLY dives into the criminology aspects of it all. She holds you. Spell-binding. Her books are great escapist reads --- but they scare the crap out of you, too, cuz they're REAL.

And as for THIS flick? How absolutely WILD? Her personal desire to give-back motivated her to volunteer for a crisis hotline. How INCREDIBLE that a guy she shifted with... turns out to be one of America's most notorious serial killers ever. BRAVO! She paid attention to what her life's path was supposed to be...and we get very cool presentations of true crime.

Before there was anything creepy-crime and "forensic-y" on the TV...there were ANNE RULE's BOOKS. Every one of them is a winner. Small Sacrifices with Farah Fawcett and The I-5 Killer with John Corbett are two more terrific flicks based on her work. Check 'em out.

I agree with you totally! She was a great writer. Small Sacrifices and the I-5 Killer are some of her best.

Most of the time the serial killer gains fame and notoriety and the victims remain nameless and faceless in the background. In Anne Rule's books, the victims are given at least as much prominence as their killers. She puts a face on the victims. They are not just crime victims. They are complete human beings with lives, careers, friends and families. She makes you feel for them. They are not just statistics but people who had their lives stolen away from them, very often in the cruelest way imaginable.
