Why is Walter referred to as Major Tom?
shareOnly the Dbag executive in charge of closing Life down calls him that. He sees Walter daydreaming and says "Ground Control to Major Tom.....come in Major Tom" to make fun of him.

Right, I just don't understand the Major Tom reference. Also later in the movie Walter's love interest sings to him as Major Tom in a day dream sequence.
shareDo you know David Bowie's "SpaceOddity"? That is the song Cheryl sings to him in the dream seguence. You noticed "Major Tom", "Can you hear me Major Tom?" was part of the lyrics.
The Dbag executive is saying "Come in Major Tom" while Walter is daydreaming, kind of like saying "Earth to Walter..." as some people say when addressing someone who is distracted.
That's all. But it does give the tie-in to Bowie's song showing up in one of his daydreams, which is what was intended.

Ha! Ha! Just wasn't much into David Bowie. I mostly remember him as the star of the movie Labyrinth. My daughter's favorite movie when she was growing up!
shareI also missed David Bowie when I was growing up; However, I was exposed to Space Oddity when it was recorded by NASA astronaut Chris Hadfield aboard the International Space Station. That video went viral in 2013, the same year as Mitty was released. I don't know which came first though. Would be quite a coincidence if there was no connection.
