For Kill Bill they advertised his Fourth Movie which would be Resevoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and of course Kill Bill. But what about this? Doesn't this count as one of his?
It's Only After You've Lost Everything That Your'e Free To Do Anything
That's exactly what i'm looking up. I saw that to on the kill bill cover yesterday and i started to count how many movies he has directed...humm...that's wierd...
"If I see one more picture of Ed Begley, Jr. in that stupid electric car, I'm gonna shoot myself!...I mean, buddy, get a real car!"
I wouldn't really say its any order of film because it wasn't really truely finished was it? He started filming it and got quite far but didnt really finish it, thats why its not counted as one of his films.
its not counted because it was never completed. they lost half of the footage in editing and it was never technically released, only a bootleg was leaked.
For some reason, My Best Friend's Birthday seemed to be discredited by Tarantino. Maybe he wasn't impressed by it or something or as it is said here, not finished. But yeah this should be considered his first motion picture.
When He was starting out as a serious director, his agent told him never to mention this film to anyone. Apparently is was that damn bad. As was stated, this film was completed but something happened to the last scene, which was Quentins favourite part. So he decided not to release it

I think it was more of a marketing thing. So that people would worship the guy, saying there isn't any Tarantino movie that's bad, not knowing the existence of this one.
They way I see it. He STILL wrote and directed this little gem, so this is his FIRST film. Kill Bill his fifth.
It may not be complete (well it was, but there was a small fire), and it may not be too easy to get hold of. But this is still the first film he directed.
If you want a copy, try E-bay.

Jeesus Christ man, maybe he also shot his sister's wedding with a handicam, or made a flipbook when he was 12. For all you know, this could be his 600th film, in that sense.
Who cares what order his movies go in. It's not like we're his *beep* biographers or something. Why don't we count his unfinished scripts if we're gonna count his unfinished movies! That way every Jane Dick and Harry who wrote a movie or fooled around with a camera can get listed on IMDb. Chill.

That is just a really stupid comment, you don't write and direct wedding videos or flipbooks.
So from a writing and directing point of view (as I orginaly stated), this WAS his first film....which makes Kill Bill no 5. Whether it was released or not and whether it was finished or not makes no difference...IT WAS THE FIRST FILM HE WROTE AND DIRECTED.
Imagine there's no heaven. It's easy if you try.

sorry in my opinion it is one of the *beep* films I have seen, even out of student films on you tube. but that's kinda cool because he suddenly goes and makes reservoir dogs which is amazing, its like from zero to hero
He made it while working at Video Archives. Half of it was destroyed in a fire. It had literally no budget. No real copies exist.
Saying it was Tarantino's first film is a big stretch. A similar idea is the fact that "Jaws" is considered Speilberg's first film, although his true first film is "Amblin'." Perhaps we should consider little movies they made on their parents' camcorder when they were little kids (i.e., the Easter egg video on the "Sixth Sense" DVD).
I hate to get so far off topic, but when/where did Speilberg say that Duel was a piece of crap. Obviously, he was young, but based on what I've seen and read he feels it has some interesting aspects and is a far cry from a piece of crap. Actually, I think he says something (or someone else did) on the new Jaws DVD documentary comparing the style of Duel to Jaws regarding the attacks from the truck and the attacks from the shark. Or something to that affect.
You cannot consider an unfinished film a credit to your name. I'm sure he's not running from it, he knew full well that it was still there. But when doing anything in show biz you don't have all these credits for unfinished projects. If that was the case could you imagine how many things would be reported on here that never got finished or released?
Duel (1971) was a made for TV movie. Steven Spielberg made Firelight (1964) which was 140 minutes long, it was his first full length movie, he was 16 when he made it. He remade it as Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
I don't think this counts as his first 'cuz it wasn't finished.
Oh on Spielberg, Amblin was a short film so that doesn't count. Duel was a feature film. But Jaws isn't considered Spielbergs first film. Sugarland Express came out before that.
Let's all remember that everyone who goes to film school makes movies there and that everyone makes some sort of unreleased trash bfore they get famous, playing around with friends or whatever.
By virtue of its never having been completed or released, and only acknowledged to a limited extent, it does NOT have to be counted as Tarantino's first film. And because the reasons most of you gave for it to be counted as such would actually make it somewhere well after his first.
to consider this his first film is quite wrong. regardless of anything, most directors directed/wrote/edited/produced/acted in/blah blah for probably hundreds upon hundreds of films whilst students, or whatever.
the point is, if he wants to call reservoir his first film, then let him? who cares man.
although...really...if you think about it...if you think about all the stuff hes done - everything hes written, directed, touched - is absolute genius. this leads me to believe that hes a pretty brilliant guy.
do brilliant filmmakers ALLOW their reel to just BURN!?!?!?!?! how many times have you heard of a film BURNING?!?!?!! come on, give me a break. i may not be a genius, but i sure as hell aint THAT stupid.
tarantino BURNT that film because it SUCKED and he KNEW IT
guaranteed he was drinking something while watching his work burn rather than trying to save it.
He doesn't consider this one of his canonical films, as it were. This isn't, to him, a true piece of cinema. As one of the commentators said, this is more of an experiment for Qentin, so it's not his first real film.
