Ending

This may just be my ignorance, or lack of concentration, but the people visiting, at the end of the movie(the ones that slides something under the door),
who are they?

I saw them being refered to as sons, I know this is a stupid question, still, if someone could clarify who they were, I would greatly appreciate it.

Isn't the grey-haired man Sasuke, who was Ono's servant? The narrative says that he had become the head of a gambling syndicate, and the thing he slides under the door looks like a packet of gambling chips. I take it that they are former Ono clan members come to say goodbye to their late lord's son, who is going to Manchuria; finding the lights out they just leave their farewell gift and go.

Your right about Sasuke, but what he slips under the door are O-mamori (an amulet which is supposed to protect the possessor from ill fortune).

Also, I assume there is also some cash wrapped in the packet. Giving cash is a common practice in Japan under circumstances like this (ie - moving away) and would make sense when Chiaki Ono says that Sasuke "takes care of them"

reply

Thank you, that's very interesting.

i think it was saito hajime. he was shot in the leg during the battle i think and didnt the old man walk with a limp?

reply

At the end of the film we see Saito leave the doctor's surgery with his small grandson, they pass the group of people we are talking about here, and walk away down the street. Sasuke and the other former retainers come to the door in a group just as the lights go out; so they leave their gift without disturbing anyone.

reply

No Way! Saito Hajime was the one visiting the doctor with his grand son.

+++ ies it safe? +++

17... thank you so much for asking that question, I couldn't figure out who they were either. Thank God there are people who pay close attention to the details.
