This movie compared to twilight!

The Movie Twilight Samurai have been praised over and over again but I think this movie touched me more then Twilight!
People keep talking about Twilight, it's a good movie but pretty slow and at time quite boring!
Why haven't this movie gotten the recognition of Twilight, I think it is a better movie!
What are your opinions?

I agree with you. I liked Twilight Samurai alot. It is really a movie worth seeing. But I liked 'Last Sword' better, it was more emotional touching with highs and lows, where 'Twilight' was a bit flat, tensionless story.

I believe it is typical for Asian movies that the tone of the movie / the genre of the movie shifts during it. 'Last Swort' starts as a realistic, sometimes violent, but humoristic samurai movie, but at the end it is very sad and emotional. By that time we are familiar with / gotten attached to the main character. so the end grabs us.

This is the gayest samurai movie ever.
What's with all the crying and stuff ??? I mean crying is ok but jeez....crying scenes that lasts more than 5 seconds and with Samurais at that! Holy Fruitcakes ! Get on with the blood and gore!
"Ran" didn't even have this amount of teardrops to flood the Grand Canyon.
Even the female characters in "Ran" were as tough as nails.

Toshiro Mifune and Akira Kurosawa would be rolling in their graves.

I don't think you can compare the two movies at all. Granted they're set in the same locale and period, but you could say the same of, for instance, The Importance of Being Ernest and Dracula! Both late Victorian upper-class Britain, but not exactly the same genre.

If you're looking for blood and gore you're in the wrong place watching either of these movies. These are character-led stories. What you want is Babycart.

I really enjoy the changes of mood in Mibu Gishi Den. There's some great moments. I love the bit where the Shinsengumi, fearsome swordsmen and fanatical upholders of the law, are having a party to celebrate their new status as the Shogun’s retainers. They all seem to be having such a good time! There are musicians and dancing geishas. People are having their photos taken – notice Kanichiro’s mates pulling faces at him to try and make him laugh during the exposure. Okita is playing some sort of children’s clapping game with a crowd of random people. Kondo, the Commander-in-Chief, takes a drink and throws his cup over his shoulder with a mad grin. Only Saito is glooming about, as usual.

It’s very poignant, considering what is to come, but it’s great fun, too.

I haven't seen twilight, but if its anything like hidden blade, which I'm sure it is, I would probobly hate it. This movie had pletty of good samurai action, but it also had a thing called charectors, that had to be delt with accordingly. "Last sword" is an amazing and powerful film. It deserves more recognition than it gets.

I'm not sure that I understand your syntax, Somers, but if you're saying that you like character-led stories rather than chanbara slashers then the Yoji Yamada trilogy should be just what you want. Or have I misunderstood you?

Ha, I think "Twilight Samurai" was infinitely better. "Last Sword" dragged on and on unnecessarily, was sappy and melodramatic, with a wandering plot and clumsily employed flashbacks. The dialogue during emotional moments wasn't exactly original, either. lol. Ok for a rainy afternoon when I've nothing better to do, but not a favorite.

i haven't seen twilight, but i'm hoping it's a little better than this one.

Last Sword was very good -- until about the last half hour when it became just one person crying after another.

i'm not looking for 2 hours of action and gore, but all the melodrama for the last quarter of the movie was just insufferable and failed to move me very much at all. such a shame, because i was really engaged up until then.

You posted this almost four years ago so I was just wondering, have you seen Twilight Samurai yet? It really is a great movie. It portrays the emotion of its story in a more subtle way than this one. Hiroyuki Sanada, one of Japan's best actors, is fantastic as ever in the starring role.

My sentiments exactly, joly.

I liked this movie but I think Twilight Samurai was much better. It portrayed the emotion of its story without pouring it on quite so thick. It was more subtle, less in-your-face.
