This Movie Needed to be made...

I just watched this movie the other day. I got in on ebay from Thailand. Really good movie. I had hoped I would get the uncut version, but maybe the US release will be. But anyways, I really enjoyed this movie because it shows us bears how we really are. I think it shows how compassionate we are for one another and how much fun we like to have.
The other reason it needed to be made was to show the world a different part of gay life that isn't so "mainstream". I think my favorite part was the suprise party they had for him. I know exactly what it's like to be at a bear party. Bears are very loving and very friendly. Unlike the annoying and sometimes backstabbing queens. The other part that was true to life was when he has the night off and does his cruising. I know it's Madrid, but it ain't too far off from Chicago. heheh It may not be a "positive" aspect or "healthy" but it's true that bears like to have fun and are a little more risquee in their sexual desires.
But all in all, I just felt a nice sense of warmth seeing my kind of guys being featured in this movie. The acting was great. Pedro and Bernardo's performances were outstanding. And it shows just how life is changing, but how there are people out there who will stop at nothing to make sure that homosexuals do not have equal rights. I have to say kudos to the director, cast and crew of this movie, it made my weekend.

Great post man! I haven't seen this movie yet, but from reading the posts, especially yours, I definitely plan to. I fit into the cub category and I love the bear scene: it is an awesome thing that there is a niche in gay culture that celebrates the real shape of men, their true nature and attitude. Do you have any other recommendations in film? Take care.

Well know in Spain, we have the same rights than heterosexual people ! :)

I agree with most of what you said. Good movie even though I somewhat wished the HIV part was left out. When I appeared in American Bear magazine I was shocked at the number of people who asked "are you HIV?" Strange as it seems when people think of the word "bear" in the gay community you may be surprised that many people think of "bare-back" sex.

Been to a few bear parties myself, yeah many guys can be loving but over the years I met quite a few backstabbing among the bears too. Also some of the parties I have been too such as Bear Invasion in Washington, DC really aren't anything more than just orgies. I am sure other bear parties ( or bear runs ) aren't all like that.

Bear Invasion also "praised" A Dirty Shame the John Waters film which had their own bear scenes. I thought that was a bit odd. I thought in a in-direct way that movie made fun of bears. A Bear calling himself "Mama Bear"? A woman who is into bears "Bear hag"? I have never seen either. And two bears having a "cub" in a three way relationship? Well...that I have seen and sadly it is one reason why some in the gay community look down at bears.

Bears are a little more risquee in their sexual desires? Yeah, you hit the nail with that one. Actually its a bit too much. Bear Invasion for example one of their events was a "poz party". People having sex for the sole purpose of catching HIV. Sick !! That rasied some eyebrows around my neck of the woods. I have a good friend who works for one of our local support groups for those with HIV/AIDS and he ( who is a gay may himself ) said that he wishes those "bear runs" would be outlawed.

Plus many bear porn films feature the act of watersports. Plus on many profiles
on the many of bear sites such as www.bear411.com its not hard to find ones that say things like "...partnered for over 20 years but our bedroom door is always open". All of this makes me wonder why no bears were ever featured on Queer as Folk or even Will & Grace? To bring on the bears then you have to go into the "kinky" stuff. With www.bear411 as popular as it is ( I heard its the second most popular gay website after www.gay.com ) does make me wonder. Its not like such a character would be not very interesting to a large group of people out there.

Back to Bearcub. Good movie overall !! However something tells me if this movie was re-made in America I would not be surprise if the results were less than positive.

I think some of what "bk69" said was more of a reply to some of the things "cubearcub" brought up about the Bear lifestyle. It has its postive and negative areas like everything else some of which was brought up in Bearcub.

I just got Bearcub and I liked it as well. It was ( IMO ) a positive movie about the bear community, actually I think it may be the only one.

He brought up some good points too. But the movie itself showed the bear community as it is. At least in Spain. In the U.S. not too differently I don't think. Like any movie that is supposed to "portray" any kind of community, you can't please everybody who see it because they feel that they're left out or don't feel their community is justified. Anyways it's just a movie.
