Things I didn't like about this film (maybe some spoilers)

First: the unneeded explicit sexual scenes. They were not easy to watch. They could have been there but they didn't have to be shown in that way.

Second:(Maybe for the gay community I would sound as a retrograde, conservative) but I really thought that it was better for the child to go to his grandma rather than to be around those gay men. I think it is not bad for a child to have a relationship with his gay uncle but to live with him, that was something else. That could confuse a child.

Third: I'm not a mother but I also thought his mother was not the best thing for the boy. His mother was irresponsible. I am not sure she loved her child if yes, why did she have to take any risks being abroad? The boy had already lost his father. He only had his mother. Why didn't she think about him?

The film is not bad but it could have been better. There are a lot of things to discuss.

First ask yourself why you find the opening scene so uncomfortable to watch?
It's just sex between bears which is a prt of the life of the protagonist which he immediately 'cleans' up preparing for the arrival of his nephew. Thus the clash between his lifestyle and his period of abstinence are demonstrated within the first 5 mins. Otherwise we wouldn't know what would create such a problem.

Secondly, The only thing that a child needs is love and protection. Someone's lifestyle is irrelevant.

I totally loved the sex scenes. It was really brave for the director including it on the final film. I wonder how this film even managed to get distributed or showed in USA, where just a male frontal nude is worse than killing ten thousand innocent people in Iraq.

The sex scenes were hot!

To deal with the third point you make, I believe the film was showing a side of realism rather than the rose-tinted view Hollywood shows to the public. Although his mother was irresponsible, it's a big fact of life that many people do use or involve themselves in recreational drug use. It's a point that whilst she isn't perfect, her love for her son is all that matters. The old saying "love conquers all" is something that is missing from most movies simply because they're very black and white in characterization.

Agreed. True, the sex scenes were things probably never before done in a mainstream American film (actually I don't think they'd ever be done). But yes, they did show that very real side of Pedro's life. Personally I thought the film was quite beautiful and honest. Unfortunately the version I got a hold of was not subtitled (I speak Spanish, but there were phrases I didn't quite get, however I understood well enough to do with out subtitles), so there were a few parts that seemed to pass me by though later I could pick out what had transpired.

I do not think being with the grandmother would have provided a healthy environment for Bernardo (it really didn't after all), since everything she did to get him was fueled by spite more than love, and enacted through blackmail. I just couldn't chear for her no matter what the circumstance. Is there one perfect solution? No. I don't think so. That is life, and I think this film did a wonderful job of portraying a true side of life and the many complications it can have. Not to mention the branching effects of the choices we make.

Right, it's better for a kid to live with a bitch grandmother who's into conservative values than a gay man who may or may not teach the kid to be open-minded about things rather than be just another bigot.

Thanks for your contribution.

Either way, he was better off without that stupid bitch of a mother of his.

I think that the uncle should have not given up on Bernardo - felt a bit betrayed when he did that.

Im a gay man but I have to confess that the inclusion of an erect penis sliding on a condom was really pushing the boundaries. And while there is nothing wrong with pushing boundaries, if the inclusion of this (and similar) scenes meant that the film received a rating that prohibited it from gaining a larger audience than what is the point?
I like the film and it's message but at the same time it's important to realize that not all gay's mens lives are like this.

The opening scene was HOT! but not needed. Overall though i liked the film. The revelation of Pedro's health was a little shocking.... only a little... but his sister too. Shocked.

The one thing that touched me the most made me shed a tear is when Bernardo is yelling at the grandmother and he already knows about Pedro and he is saying how he felt he was there to take care of Pedro not the other way around. The same as he cares for his mother. That touched me it was so powerful, and coming from a child made feel very good inside.

That certainly wasn't in the version I rented!
