favourite wife

which wives did you think were the best. i think catherine of aragon looks perfect but my favourite would have to be anne of cleves. what about you?

reply

Do you mean who was best cast? Who was the best actress in this film? or who you like best historically.

Historically, pretty predictable, but I like Anne Boleyn.

reply

anne of cleves is the best. historically and as actress in the film.

Anne of Cleves, i think if he would have slept with her she would have given him children the other wives were way to frail. catherine of aragon is second she and anne of cleves seemed to me to be just like her. also in my opinion the english girls were kinda ugly. anne and catherine were the prettiest....

Without a doubt, my favourite is Anne Boleyn. Completely agree with Starkey; she was a remarkable woman (although I'm more favourable towards Anne than Starkey is).

I don’t have a least favourite as I find all their stories completely fascinating including their individual marriages to Henry. But Katherine Parr is my second favourite.

I disagree with Starkey’s view of Anne's relationship with the princess Mary (I think this is slightly one-sided and doesn’t take into account Henry's actions or even Mary's). He argues that Anne developed a fierce protective love for Elizabeth which apparently caused her to act maliciously against Mary. I don't really buy that and I feel Starkey relies too much upon Chapuys’ accounts for this period which of course are quite biased.

I like how he focuses on Anne's knowledge of the divorce procedure; I certainly think Anne did her homework on that. I also tend to agree with Starkey's theory that Anne and Henry underwent some form of marriage service twice in Nov 1532 (the first being on the 14th at Dover) before she agreed to sleep with him. I find it hard to understand why Anne, who refused to sleep with Henry for several years, would choose to sleep with him without entering some kind of binding ceremony. Of course this made Henry a bigamist (although in his mind he had never married Katherine in the first place), but it meant some security for Anne's position.

I like Starkey; I think his history documentaries are great and his work on the wives is far better than most other books on the same subject.

All of it; that she developed a malicious streak when Elizabeth was born and she directed this on Mary. I think that is taking credit away from those who actually did Mary most harm (and by ‘those’ I really mean Henry VIII, who's harsh treatment towards her continued after Anne died.)

Anne Boleyn is still my number 1 favorite. i admire her for everything she did.

Guess I'm in the minority, but Catherine Howard, number five, is my favorite wife. My mom says it's probably because I was about her age when I first became interested in the Tudor gang.

Anne Boleyn is my favourite because she is a fanasticing woman in History :)
