Your Interpretation Of 'The Only Gay In The Village'

How do you interpret this?

When I watched this, I took it that the character, Gavin, had to feel persecutied for his sexual orientation and that no one else understood what he was going thru.

I recently thought about an old episode of Are You Being Served, when Alfie Bass joined the show, and the staff was having applications for the position vacated by Mr. Tebbs.

One man entered, virtually mirroring Mr. Humphries, and when he said he reached his peak at Harrods, Humphries said 'well, you won't find anything like that here, good day' and tore up his application.

Lucas asked why Humphries did that.

Humphries responded, you don't want people like that working here!

That was really open to interpretation and hilariously so, but I do kind of wonder now if it is connected, or able to be connected, to Little Britain's I'm The ONly Gay In The Village.

Are these making fun of individual homosexuals who feel he is the only one to be experiencing what he is going thru and no one else can relate, or was it more black-on-black crime, where homosexuals discriminate against one another?

I would say the first one. Additionally, it makes fun of people, who expect eveyone to be hostile towards them just because they are "different" (and not only in terms of sexuality) and it of course reverses our (and Daffyd's) expectations of small-town narrow mindedness, depicting a situation in which it is non existent.
Furthermore, it of course also teases people who like to be different than anyone else under all circumstances and being afraid to be nothing special.

I think there are a lot of aspects to it, even in so far, that I sometimes doubted that Daffyd is really gay, believing that he just wants to be special and to stand out, no matter which way.

This is one of my favorite sketches on the show.

I think its a well established fact that poor Daffyd only "thinks" he's gay, as he has never actually had gay sex . . . further more his "desire" or "expectation" that because he is gay subject to perscution.

The real humor of this sketch is Daffyd's delusion that "He is the only GAY in the villiage." When in fact the entire town is full of gays.

Hail to Daffyd Thomas, the only heterosexual person in Llanddewi!

Daffydd does seem genuinely attracted to the blacksmith in Series 1.

I think he is gay, but is too concerned with his appearance to think about sex.

I always interpreted as he wanted to feel unique in the village and if any other gay characters appeared it threatened his sense of uniqueness as the only gay in the village

That's what I believe as well. I'm not sure he is actually gay (maybe he is but then he is afraid to actually live it at one of the many opportunities) but the point is he wants to be something special.

I think that everyone has mentioned the main interpretation of the humor and point of the character.

He is obviously obsessed with seeming unique to the point of ridiculousness. One interpretation is that he is not in fact gay but just wants to be a victim of other people so he can get out of working. I also wonder if he has a little crush on Myfanwy but feels as though he would be too effeminate for her, so pretends he's gay in an over-exaggerated way.
