It was like marzipan....

Good looking but ultimately unsatisfying. The only dull movie about a serial killer I've ever seen (and it's a shame too because the director had great material to work with). The recreations were ho hum at best and after the first couple of times seeing the same photos pop up got dull. Hopefully "The Devil In The White City" (the book that the documentary was based on) will be a better movie.

Of course "The Devil in the White City" movie will be good and make a lot of money, since it will most likely have millions of dollars for a budget. The filmmaker of HH Holmes created the film 100% independently. He created the entire film on his own, serving as writer, director, producer, and editor. You have to give this guy kudos for having the balls to create the first film ever on this criminal genius as well as competing withe the big boys in Hollywood.

It really stinks that entrepreneurs are frowned down upon in this day and age. In the past, smaller guys were looked up to and appreciated. Now, if a little guy creates something it is called crap because it isn't like the product created for millions of dollars.

How do you know so much about what this guy did? You talk as if you were there. Maybe this j*ck*ss is just stealing all the credit.

BTW, I am not sure about the phrase, "competing withe the big boys in Hollywood. " Not just the spelling, but competing means you are keeping up with the big boys. I only heard about this movie off of my girlfriend's weird cousin, who did recommend it. The Big Boys have a lot more going for them than one weird goth putting it on his fave picks list. I could say I'm competing for chicks with Leo Dicaprio (sp?) but the truth is that I am no competition for him.

Besides, this movie probably cost a lot more than you think. Most people in indie films are raging drug addicts. I know this as fact because I heard it on the radio one day. So, the money that was supposed to be used to make a compelling movie was instead wasted on drugs and booze. So, no kudos to this raging whoremonger until he confesses he snorted the whole budget. How do i know he is a raging whoremonger? What director isn't? Hell, I don't direct and even i monger a few here and there.

Oh, and "it really stinks that entrepreneurs are frowned down upon in this day and age. In the past, smaller guys were looked up to and appreciated. Now, if a little guy creates something it is called crap because it isn't like the product created for millions of dollars."

YOU ARE TOTALLY RIGHT! That is why Hollywood make so much crap, like the horrible remakes and the endless parade of sequels, part 3's, etc. I mean, did we really need another crappy Oceans movie? But, most entrepreneurs make stuff like this, which is not mainstream, and even with a large budget would probably be doomed to a niche market. BTW, nice job on this one, mr director. One day I hope to see your Fish movie, I hear it is cold blooded. HAHA LQTM!

Oooooookaaaaaaay. And I'll bet you thought this was.....funny? Let the nice man in the white coat read it and maybe he'll give you something that makes you see the pretty colors again.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

I agree, this was a rather dull film. I've read "Devil In The White City" and have been truly fascinated with this killer ever since. It is such a fascinating tale, yet this film made it seem incredibly dull. I live in Philadelphia, and the site of where Moyamensing Prison used to stand is just a few blocks from my home. An Acme market stands at the site now, and someone informed me that inside the store you can find old pictures of the prison...although I have yet to find them.

the book written by Harold Schechter (interviewed in this little effort) "Depraved" is really the "go to" tome on H H Holmes

I guess then that I'm the only person that enjoyed this documentary. From the way the OP was describing it, it sounded as if he/she believed it to be a regular biopic movie, sort of in the same vein as say Lincoln or like the WWII in HD or Vietnam in HD. It's definitely not a movie you can just sit down to, to kill an hour. At times it did drag a bit, but overall I found it fascinating. Although I'm probably in the minority for being someone that likes to watch documentaries on serial killers such as H.H. Holmes, Charles Manson, Jack the Ripper etc. Not because I look up to them or find them "cool" but because I'm personally intrigued by how their minds work, and I enjoy learning about those aspects of history. That's who I would recommend this documentary to.

If it's been fifteen years or more, it's no longer a spoiler.

I agree, I thought it was damn entertaining. And to the guy who tackled this project singlehandedly, kudos to you.

And to the guy who called Holmes a "criminal genius" above, if he was really a "genius", we wouldn't know his identity and he damn sure wouldn't have gotten caught.

Marzipan unsatisfying? What a dull comparison.

I found it extrordinarily dull as well. And it's such an interesting story! It's remarkable that the filmmakers somehow managed to make it boring. They couldn't have done a better job of that if it had been their goal.

I blame the narration, mainly. The worst sort of dry history-text style, and the monotone delivery didn't help.
