Where in the world...?

To me the most haunting image of the film is the scene with the trash compactor.
The guys doing it look like regular Joes doing their job. They seem to find their monstrous deed simply pragmatic.

Beyond the talk about "going vegan" or "keep eating meat" I find this question much more important:

In which parts of the world is compassion for animals the norm?
Where do people grow up without any such feelings?

I would invite people from different parts of the world to share their experiences.
Not about the meat industry or cultural aberrations - but about the common view of the people.

To make a start:

URBAN GERMANY

I dare say that most people in Germany feel strongly about animals.

In urban areas neglected pets are rare occurences and still make the news.
Dogs and cats are usually registered and spayed.

Some people might use too small cages for rabbits, and some guinea pigs might die from hugs of too little children. But that's about it, and it is usually frowned upon to keep pets under anything than perfect conditions.

Stray animals are extremely rare, and if one is spotted, it is usually big business. People usually call an animal shelter to take care of it and often phone in later to check what happened.

Other animals in the city are quite rare.
Pigeons have gained a bad name in recent years, and if weasels show up at night, it is usually considered an adventurous spotting.

Unwanted house guests like mice or rats are usually treated with panic, because people want to get rid of them without causing harm.
Questionable traps like "glue paper" are prohibited, while live traps are quite popular, and although it is forbidden, I think that most people would take the trouble to drive into a forest in order to release a captured rat.

Hunting or other blood sports are totally uncommon.
If hu8nting is done in rural areas, it is done with descretion.

I am no big fan of most of my country's culture, but in my 40 years I have never met anybody who was seriously cruel or cold-blooded when it comes to animals.

How about your country?
