Are animals that are 'trained' to be in films also abused?

Watching this documentary got me thinking about all the films I've seen in my lifetime with animals in them, from bears to elephants to dolphins and monkeys.

When a film claims at the end that 'no animals were harmed in the making of this movie', can we believe that?

Just read this:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/feature/

"it turns out that audiences reassured by the organization’s famous disclaimer should not necessarily assume it is true. In fact, the AHA (American Humane Assn) has awarded its “No Animals Were Harmed” credit to films and TV shows on which animals were injured during production. It justifies this on the grounds that the animals weren’t intentionally harmed or the incidents occurred while cameras weren’t rolling."

I suppose we shouldn't really be surprised that Hollywood types might lie in order to maintain their reputation and ability to earn money.

Any film with elephants being ridden is terrible. They aren't meant to carry weight on their backs.

Animals in circuses are definitely abused and mistreated.

Going to the zoo supports animal-friendly organizations. Non profit zoos donate part of the proceeds and give shelter to many animals who have illegally been kept as pets and/or otherwise have no other place to go and cannot return to the wild.

Animals used in film, I believe, are exploited. Abuse is on a case by case basis, I would say.

There is abuse in a all walks of life. In every institution/organization you can think of, from animals getting abused to human beings. It's prevalent everywhere. And it's not a stretch to think it's happening in film making. Which is such a massive industry. There is bound to be abuse.
