About that table...

I feel there is something half revealed about the table, and then not. The protagonist's fiancee makes clear that the table is the scene for the players to act, in a sense a mini-representation of the whole film.

I seem to remember that the fiancee said she bought the table especially cheap, used, because of some specific circumstances. What were those circumstances?

Then I can swear there was a scene where the fiancee is kneeling (housecleaning?) and noticing something *on the underside* of the table. At the time I thought this was a clue that would eventually lead to a revelation, but nothing ever came.

Then there is the whole scene smashing the lamps and the table. This takes an awful long time and to me there is something off in the whole scene. After he has smashed the table he still keeps the chair lifted, as if he senses danger.

Any thoughts?
