The wife....spoilers

During the beginning of the movie, the husband asks the wife to cook dinner for the kids since he has an important work meeting. She complains that she's going to the gym.....It's her one night off. Being a parent is a 24/7 job. The husband has a business and his meeting is important in order to support the family. When conflicts arise you have to prioritize, she doesn't seem to understand or at least is annoyed that she she has to give that time up. She's selfish. When she tells her husband that Lilly died, the husband comes a cross very sympathetic towards her feelings, places his hand on hers but she pulls her hand away. She doesn't seem to appreciate the jester. It's evident that the husband was a bit of a jerk when first told she was going to return Lilly's ashes home but from his view point he's concerned about their family including his wife. He may come off as sounding a bit selfish himself but not just for him but for the family. The wife doesn't seem to know how to be a parent or she's reluctant to be one. When the daughter is playing music loudly she tells her to turn it down. The daughter turns the volume up instead. The wife/mother doesn't say anything just walks out of the room. She should have taken then stereo out of the room for that behavior. When Lilly's ashes arrive the wife announces that she's taking her home, no discussion just sternly announces she's taking her home. Again selfish... Not like saying I NEED to take her home..she was way too confrontational towards her family. When she arrives in Hawaii with Lilly's ashes, she almost immediately has googly eyes for the young nephew and even more so the following morning. At breakfast she plays with her hair a bit when nephew looks a her like she's flattered by his attention. Then she stares at him as he's leaving the house. On the way to view the property she pays way too much attention towards the nephew, continuing to watch him as they pass and checking him out in the side view mirror. When the wife is later asked by her mother if her family was here, without any emotion, she simply says she came without them. Not the way you would think a loving devoted mother would answer. The wife's Mother, probably thinking her answer was strange, mentions that her children must miss her. She says she doubts it since her husband lets them get away with murder. The wife's mother asks her if she misses them and she says she's enjoying the time by herself. The wife then smiles and asks if that sounded awful. She knows it does....but she doesn't even show a hint of regret for saying so. When the wife discovers who her mother is, she's upset by what she has learned and calls her husband announcing her plan to come home. The husband is sympathetic and wants to know if she's alright and tells her he's there if she needs him. She doesn't seem appreciative of his feeling for her and as soon as she sees the nephew she abruptly says she has to go. When the husband reminds her that his there if she needs him she just says "thanks" and hangs up. She thought it more important to talk to the nephew right then than her husband. She could have spoken to nephew at any time after. When she calls the family and leaves a message telling them she's staying, she just says "I'll catch up with you tomorrow" and then says okay before hanging up. She doesn't say anything liked "I miss you" or "I love you". She seems to have no feelings for her family. While running alone on the beach, she stares at the nephew who's net fishing wearing only swimming trunks. At the end of her conversation with him he begins to flirt suggesting she needs to get in the water. She says she's not a good swimmer. He says he is. It was an obvious invitation to join him. She stares into his eyes but says nothing to discourage him other than saying she has to get back. This guy knows she's married and flirts with her? She's married and says nothing to discourage him? I thought it interesting too that she took off her sunglasses when speaking to him like she was removing a barrier and letting him look into her eyes. Later, as she's about to get into her car, she sees him on the street walking into a restaurant and follows. She smiles at him and offers to buy him a drink. After the hint of flirting on the beach it wasn't an appropriate thing to do, rather it seemed to be an invitation for him to continue. Then Nephew tells her about his son but she makes no mention of her children and looks at him and laughs like a schoolgirl when he walks her to her car. When he tells her that he's going to take her somewhere that will change her and that it's a secret, see agrees to go. Her only concern seems to be that he's taking her very early in the morning. When she returns her husband's call she refuses to talk to her daughter, when told that they have problems at home she immediately tells husband not to lay it on her and to act like a father. Then rather defiantly she tells him that she doesn't know when she's returning but she's staying for at least another week. She could have at least said that she would call later and speak to her daughter. Hearing the news of what her daughter was caught doing, she didn't seem upset. At the ended of the call the husband says he misses her and all she can unemotionally say is "me too". She acts like a terrible uncaring mother. At the beach when she agrees to go into the water with the nephew, he checks her out as she removes her shirt and she does the same to him. They then hold hands as they run into the water. This guy is slick and an obvious player, I can't believe that she's not onto him and his subtle come-ons unless she has ideas as well. In the cave, she she says that it's freezing in there and then asks him if she's out of her mind. Obviously she is for letting him talk her into swimming there in the first place given that she admitted earlier that she wasn't a good swimmer. He continues with a flirtatious remark. She looks at the blue in the cave then they look at each other and kiss passionately. Let me remind you that she's married to a loving husbands and has two children. Everything isn't perfect at home all the time but anyone married with kids knows that. She's passionately kissing a younger guy who knows she's married with kids so what does that say about him? Nothing more than the passionate kiss is shown before cutting to the next scene. It wouldn't be far fetched, except for the title of the movie, to assume something more might have happened although she denied it later. Meanwhile the husband, out of concern for his wife and I'm sure his family, takes his kids with him to Hawaii. Later on the beach, the wife tells the nephew that she's worried about everything including her kids and if plastic causes cancer like it's all a joke. Up to this point she never gave any indication of being concerned about her family at home. The Nephew continues to flirt and asks her what she wants. She says she wants a lot of things but that doesn't mean she should have them. The Nephew tells her that she can have this moment if she wants it. There's a clue here for her but she doesn't seem to get it...he's a player and not interested in anything lasting. In the truck the nephew puts a flower in her hair as they stare at each other like a couple of teens. She smiles and shows no regret for what she did or her feelings for him. She's half smiling as she runs from the truck to her place. After showering, she's looks at the flower he gave her that's on the dresser and puts it back in her hair while looking at herself in the mirror. Obviously thinking or fantasizing about the nephew.
Still wearing the flower in her hair, the wife is surprised to see her family had arrived to support her. She says she missed them, hugs her children and then her husband who gives her a kiss but she doesn't return it. When then husband takes her hand, she steps back so he has to release it. When then husband says that the kids will be staying in the big house and the aunt says she thought it would be good for her and her husband to spend some time alone, she doesn't seem to like the idea at all. She looks at the aunt who seems to have a knowing look on her face. Apparently she's aware of what the nephew is up to and possibly about their relationship. When the wife's and nephew's families are introduced to each other, the wife is obviously nervous and the nephew seems to glance over at the husband with distain. Im also noticed that the wife was smiling and playing with her hair like an infatuated schoolgirl when she looked over at the nephew who was in turn looking at her with a smile. She may have done it out of nervousness but doubtful. Later, the wife/ mother talks to both children and shows a concern a mother should have for her kids however, when she sees her aunt afterwards and the aunt says to her that it's a nice surprise that her family came wall that way to see her she has a look of contempt on her face and says grudgingly "yes, isn't it". It's apparent that the aunt, thinking that something might be up between her son (the nephew) and the wife, that she called the husband and that's why they flew there. When the wife tells her husband, who's sitting with the nephew, that she's going to turn in she keeps glancing at the nephew rather than giving her attention to the husband. When the wife and husband are walking back to the house they have an arm around each other but the wife seem lost in thought while the husband talks about the nephew. She then stops to pick a flower like the one the nephew gave her. The husband takes it from her and puts it in her hair but she was seemingly thinking of the nephew when she picked it. The husband tells her that he looks at her every day and that she's beautiful. He kisses her but see doesn't seem to respond as she should. She breaks from the kiss and moves a little backwards and says she's sorry but tired and walks away taking off the flower he put in her hair. She seemed revolted by the thought of the husband putting it in her hair rather than the nephew. In a latter scene, The nephew's son asks the wife's daughter how long her parents have been divorced even though the wife was wearing a wedding ring throughout and at the table where the two families were introduced. The daughter tells him that they're not divorced. The son seems surprised and says that's not good. The daughter asks why and he tells her that her mom has been hanging out with his dad. She says "maybe but not that way". He says "yeah I'm pretty sure that way". The daughter looks a bit distraught. The nephew's son apparently is very aware of his father's ways with women as is the nephew's mother. When the husband sees his wife with the nephew in town and the way she looks, touches, and caresses the nephew's face after an altercation between the nephew and the land developers, he becomes concerned about the relationship between the two. When the nephew walks away, she seems to be disappointed that her husband showed up and she watches the nephew as he walks away. When the husband drives his wife back to the house, he confronts her and asks what the deal is, if she has something with him the nephew. She pauses, looks down and says no, she then looks up and says almost. She says there was "just a moment" and that he made her feel "alive and free". Obviously referring to being free from being a wife and mother. She tries to explain herself but it lacks any remorse or guilt for the way she felt. He tells her that he loves her and why. He pleads with her not to fall out of love with him but she shows no emotion and just walks away. Her whole reasoning in what she told him was again being only concerned with herself even though she had a loving husband. She's self centered and selfish. Even after her husband pleads with her she has a look on her face like she doesn't care about him. Rather than doing the adult thing and talk her issues out with her husband or get professional help she opted to allow herself to get involved with another guy. Later the daughter asks the nephew's son why he said that about her mom and his dad. He tells her he said it because he knows him (his dad the nephew). This just supports my earlier conclusion that the nephew is a player and it's known by his son and mother as well. When the wife is later confronted by her daughter the daughter's description of the mother was right on. She said that her mother didn't care about anyone but herself. She never had time for anyone but herself. She told her mother that she tried to be like what her mother wanted her to be but she never had any time for her. She said that her mother (the wife) had time for her brother, her job and dad but that was before she started sleeping with the nephew. The wife/mother says that what she (the daughter) heard was wrong. Rather than try to explain, she tells her daughter not to talk to her that way. When the daughter says she's telling her dad she tells her daughter to "get out of here" then says "no" that she's going to leave and that she was never very good at being a mother. She obviously has serious issues, both personal and with her family, especially with her daughter. She's right when she says that she's not a good mother (nor a good wife for that matter). She then runs off while her daughter calls out to her. I'm going to assume that the daughter did tell her father about the supposed affair since you don't see him again for awhile. At that point, if I were the husband, I would have taken the kids and left letting the wife know that he was going to leave her and not bother to return home. Just my opinion. I happen to take wedding vows seriously. There is a line just before the end of the movie, at the ceremony for Lilly, where it is said that love is not finite, it has no conditions, it's only requirement is that we put others before ourselves. The wife did not put anyone before herself; she was selfish. The wife swims out to the cave and asks her deceased friend Lilly for help. A little late considering she has already damaged her relationship with her husband and daughter. Later, she admits that she was too wrapped up in her own life and neglected Lilly. In her own way she admitted that she was selfish. At this point I could have started to feel some sympathy for her. She's asked if she wants to make things right by the nephew's mother. She has tears and hugs her the nephew's mother but doesn't say that she does. It's easy to assume that she does but then with whom does she want to make things right with? Everyone, or just the Hawaiian family and her mother? When the kids are missing in a storm, the husband shows much more concern for them than the wife and she tries to calm him down. She doesn't act like a distraught mother at all. She seems to have a strange look on her face when she looks at the nephew before he leaves with the husband to look for the kids. Maybe it's just me but the look on her face is like she's more concerned about him being out in the storm than her husband and kids. At the ceremony for Lilly, the wife appears to have repaired her relationship with her daughter and husband, taking his hand, kissing him and his hand. But wait ....During the ceremony when it was said that love is putting others before yourself apparently it didn't sink in for the wife. When the wife is asked by her mother, " what now?" She pauses, takes a breath and, like she's sad about it, she says she's going back with her family and her life. She then meets with the nephew who says he doesn't want her to go and that he has feelings for her, that he never had for anyone. He toys with her hair and the side of her face. She doesn't do anything to stop it, she just cants her head towards his hand as if she enjoys it. He says that they belong together and she says she belongs "with her family"' that's who she is. She says nothing about loving them or her husband. The nephew takes her hand and places it on his chest over his heart and she places her other hand over his. She doesn't pull it away. Instead she tears up, cup his face in her hands and kisses him on the lip...not the cheek but the lips! She's slow in removing her hands from his face, almost hesitant. Then with more tears she says goodbye, staring at him as he walks away and she takes a deep breath. She doesn't walk away from him...he walks away from her! My first thought was that the husband should have left her. Then I started to feel a little sorry for her but after that last scene With the nephew my first thoughts were correct. She apparently had no real love for her family she only felt a duty to return with them. The nephew was a player so it would have served her well to stay with the guy and then get dumped by him down the road. Then she would have known what her husband felt when she started up with the guy. Afterwards when she finally shows up at her then ex-husband's door, if she did after getting dumped, I would have closed the door on her. As the husband, I would have filed for divorce and sought custody of the kids since she wasn't a very good mom and admitted as much. There was no real redemption or healing on her part towards her family as evident by the last scene with the nephew. It left me feeling that her mannerisms towards her family during the ceremony for Lilly was just a false public display of affection.
