One of the worst piece of acting in Hollywood history?

Hi all!

Now, don't get me wrong, I really like this movie! I have the DVD and everything, so I'm not bagging it.

But everytime I watch it I just CRINGE and LAUGH when the daughter says "Why not?! Why don't you teach mum how to dance?!"

Is it just me, or was the one of the most dreadful pieces of acting in all of history?

Who's with me?? :D

Have a great day!

I loved this movie, but I can't say I noticed the daughter was a dreadful actor--
the line doesn't really give her that much to work with, but what else should
she have done? I liked the scene.

Have a great day, yourself!

My life may be an open book, but don't expect me to read it to you

Yeh that's probably true - not much to work with at all.

It just seems like she's being way too angry - kind of like Quincy M.E...

Well maybe there's another reason why it makes me cringe...not sure.

Why don't you teach mum how to dance......hehe

Have a great day.

reply

Haha.. I'm with you. That line was just way out in left field.

It was almost like she went a little bit sad/pleading with the line and the director said... "No, I need you to be angry with you dad at this point" and she just wasn't feeling it. So she had a big fight with the director about it and of course the director always wins so she went purposely "over the top" with it.

Or she's just terrible and the director didn't want to make Gere sit there thru another take.

reply

Ha ha ha, yeh!

And there's another one too.....He's AR-some! Dad is AR-some!

GAAHHHH!!! :D

Have a great day.

I am in complete agreement. The american version doe not hold a candle to the Japanese version. I had seen it many years ago and it was a delight! Recently, someone had recommended I see this film given my involvement in ballroom dancing. The title sounded familiar but I rented it anyways. What a disappointment! Especially Jennifer Lopez. She was not credible whatsoever. Her character trying to convey passion was laughable and not at all believeable. I think she is basically trashy and trying to throw her in a classy role did not work whatsoever. They should have used Selma Hayak.

I was impressed Richard Gere could move his hips, but felt nauseated half of the time by the stupid looks on his face. His feet under the desk dancing did not work.

I love Susan Sarandon, thought she did a good job for the role and their relationship seemed to work. The fight they had in the parking garage though did not work at all.

I must have paused this movie over a dozen times when I found something better to do then get painfully through it. A waste of money......

can't say i noticed the daughters bad acting either

jennifer lopez on the other hand...LMAO absolutely awful! And the thing is she isn't a terrible actress, but she just chose a role that really didnt suit her.

the daughter was awful from the very beggining. i agree, she made me cringe everytime she said anything throughout the whole movie.

I thought Susan Sarandon was amazing, as usual, but I agree that Salma Hayek should have taken Jennifer Lopez's part, she would have been better!

"Is it just me or does anyone else see the little fashion elf?"

Shall we dansu? - the original Japanese film - is a work of art. The third rate imitation is an embrrasment

A lot of the "bad acting" might be explained (if not justified) by the fact that this is a faithful remake of a Japanese movie; the dancing feet under the desk, the awkwardness between family members, and the character that Lopez plays... just make a lot more sense in that context.

THe writers could have done a better job setting the script for her character. BUT..she isn't a key player in the movie, this line did, for lack of a better term, suck.
